Turn key to start and all lights go on and all I hear is one chug. Turn key off wait 1+ minute and try again with 80% success and sometimes have to try more but still wait quite a while before trying will get 0 success. I did read somewhere to pump the gas a few times after failed start with key off and try again and I have done that 2 times now with 100% success on the restart. I don't have $1000 to replace the TIPM that others talk about so I guess I will keep doing this for as long as I can. It's been happening for over 1 year now and it's random as far as frequency. Sometimes a few times a month other times half a dozen or more times a month. Never not been able to get it to start but my heart always skips a beat and stomach drops especially when I have my twin toddlers with me alone. Never had to have it jumped either. Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test
What you didn't mansion is does the engine crank and no start or when you turn the key nothing happened. So for right now I am going to assume the engine doesn't crank due to the dealer saying it needs a battery. For this simple test you need 2 people and a hammer. When person 1 turns the key to crank position and car doesn't crank hold the key in the start position don't let up have person 2 open hood and tap on starter couple times and if car starts cranking and starts up the car is going to need starter. I found quit a few bad starters in Honda. If the car cranks but doesn't start check if it has spark. Another common problem is the distributors go bad but they cost a lot and you should do the proper test to make sure thats the problem.
I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?
It should be under warranty, take it back to the dealer. Sounds like your losing the fuel prim to the engine. Before starting it turn the key's to the accessory for about 5 sec before starting it and see if the helps start's the car.
