If I recall correctly the door handle should be similar to the F150. The rod should have a plastic at the end that hooks to a mechanism where the inside door handle should go. I have a clip for you which you could use as reference.
In case the handle is different it may be the second type which connects directly to the handle. It should hook to the handle but you will have to turn the handle to get the rod locked. This video is from an explorer.

ok. first u remove the door panel(s), with the window rolled up, u will be able to see the back side of the exterior door handle. there will be three bolts, they are size 10metric. there is also a rod attached to the handle held in place by a plastic clip, remove the rod, then remove the three bolts. from the outside remove the exterior door handle being careful not to scratch painted surface. Repeat for the other door(s). Repeat this for installation.
Its very easy to do, did mine today, pull the door panel off, 3 screws 2 on each corner of the bottom of the door and one in the grab handle tray. Look at the door handle there will be a small plastic circle that pops off remove plastic piece and remove screw, lift door panle upwards and off. 3 screws for the new door handle remove old one unclip door lock and unclip door handle install new one same way you took the old one off.
