Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada

Cant get shifter to get out of park

I have a 1998 bravada
I cannot get the truck out of park.
I try to push the button - but it wont work. If I play with it enough, shaking it around, or keep jamming it - eventually it might work. ( once it has moved past park - it drives perfect.

Does it sound like I need a new Shifter Assembly?
Someone said it could be a faulty solenoid inside the assembly - but you replace the whole thing.
I can get 1 from my local junkyard for 40 bucks.
Can this be done by an idiot like me?

thank you in advance.

The SUV starts and runs fine.

The problem is with getting it into gear.

The actually shifter doesnt want to engage.

there have been times I have been able to get it to engage by either jiggling ( very hard ) the shifter. Sometimes banging it left and right while holding the button very hard.

Once its engaged - it flows very smoothly from gear to gear. The ONLY problem is getting the button to engage all the way to get it out of park,

Ive been told it works on an electric sensor - thats why I asked if it could be a solenoid problem

Yes it has a electric sensor at the shifter and this part can be purchased from a local dealer. not hard to replace after the plastic is removed from around the shifter. the reason i asked if the key could be removed is that, it also has an electronic release as well and diff. part. hope the info will help you.

How do i fix my Chevy Cobalt. Floor shifter stays stuck in park postion. I am pressing brake pedal and pushing the shifter button.

have a helper. tell him to press brake pedal. you come to back of vehicle and see if the brake lights work when helper press the pedal. if lights don't work the tail light fuse has blown. so you cant take from park. and on some brands if horn fuse blown you cant take from park.

My car will not turn over, the lights will come on but the clicking wont when I try and start it. When I turn fully, the car goes completely mute.

I'm not sure what you mean the "clicking won't" but I do know that sometimes on my 98 the safety neutral won't engage.
I know, What?
Try pushing forward on your shifter when it's in park then try the key again.
If that doesn't work, look at your shifter and down on the trim that shows what gear your in, on the right side of the shifter you'll see a black, probably, plastic plug. Take your finger nail of a small screw driver and gentle pry it out. Now you'll have a hole and you will need something that will fit down in that hole like a screw driver, not really long one, and down in there is a button.
Find it and push down on it while pressing on the button of your shifter like taking it out of park. While you are pushing down on the button in the hole and taking it out of park, once you succeed in getting it out of park, give the shifter another good shove into park and try and start it again. This is called a saftey neutral lock out switch. I can usually just push on my shifter and turn the key again and it'll start. The first time it happened to me though, I was really messed up, I thought battery, starter, you name it, then it dawned on me, oh wow, that was a messed up deal for about a half hour because I was 300 miles from home and had just bought the car and didn't have a clue, I really hope this is your problem and helps. Good luck

97 mazda 626 wont shift from park. release button on side of shifter wont push in. removed knob, plastic rod in center wont move

The 1st thing you need to do is check the brake lights, if they are not wiorking the park lock solenoid doesn't get power and the park lock remains engaged.

there is a button right beside your shifter that will release the lock underneith the plastic arouns the shifter. remove the plastic rubber around the shifter and lift the plastic up. there will be a button you can press to release the shifter lock in cases of emergency. careful removing the plastic but may require some light prying action to get it off. hit the button with a srewdriver or key and move the shifter out of park. you will still need to be in park or neutral to start the car. the main problem is probably a park/neutral module, a bad shifter, or a brake pedal sensor

These wear out with time - I would consider putting a towel at the bottom of the shifter - and get a card board back up [ for the over spray] and spray right into the button - spray a lot - way way too much as only a tiny fraction will get past the button. Also push the shifter a little harder forward and then push the button.

Shifter problem

If you take the center console apart and look at the shifting lever, you will be able to tell how it works and figure out what is happening with it. you have to push in on your brake pedal first, of course, and thta will actuate a solinoid in the center console. The solinoid may be faulty or you may have a pinched wire causing this.
You are not an idiot by any means I would guess. You should be able to figure this out. It is a pretty simple assembly.
If you are parking on a hill then you could be experiencing the transmission parking paw having pressure on it, which will cause you to not be able to shift out of park. If you are parking on a hill, I would suggest that you use your parking brake before you put your vehicle in park. This is take the pressure off the parking paw.
