    if the coolant is not rusty then u have most likely a blown head gasket.

Two things could be wrong here. 1.) The easiest to replace is the Thermostat. Follow the big hose off the top of the radiator and it will take you right two it. A hose clamp 2 bolts and its off. The part is around 15 bucks at your local parts store. 2.) you could have a bad water pump. to change this around 150 if you do it yourself. or if you have it done around 300. I would start by changing the thermostat as thats your most likely problem. Thanks for using FixYa!

Car over heating


The most common cause is low coolant level, so check the radiator and overflow tank and fill as needed. If coolant is over 2 years old, it is a good idea to change the coolant and thermostat-start afresh.
Check the radiator cap. If it doesn't hold pressure of about 13-15 psi in the coolant system, the seal is bad and a new radiator cap is called for. The coolant system is a sealed system, so you should never have to add coolant, save for a small loss through evaporation in the overflow tank. If you are losing coolant, there must be a leak that needs found and repaired-a pressure test of the system should show up a leak.
When the engine is warmed up, the thermostat opens and coolant is circulated through the engine (pushed by the water pump on the front of the engine), into the upper radiator hose to the radiator, and down through the radiator where it is cooled, then back to engine and water pump through the lower radiator hose-a continuous circulation. If anything blocks this circulation (like a partially plugged radiator, or leaves, trash or debris on the outside of the radiator preventing good radiator cooling) then you could get engine overheating. You may want to have the coolant circulation checked, and/or have the radiator and engine flushed. Also possible that the water pump may not be promoting good flow-the impellers on the pump may be worn down to stubs-this can happen if regular maintenance is not observed.
Your radiator fans should also be checked that they work when called for.
The worst case would be a blown cylinder head gasket-another common cause of overheating, and the most expensive fix. A compression test could check for this condition- a cylinder or two with low compression indicates head gasket failure. Coolant can get mixed in with the oil, or it may wind up in the cylinders and get burned, putting out white smoke out the exhaust.
Overheating is bad on engines, get it checked right away.

Heater works when driving car but not when at an idle


I'm assuming the heater blower motor does not stop working, but that the heater output temperature drops. Two possibilities: 1) Coolant level is low, 2) some type of blockage is allowing engine coolant to circulate only at higher rpm. Check the coolant level. If it's ok and this is an older vehicle that has never had the coolant system flushed, there may be buildup in the system that blocks circulation in the heater core.

The car was overheating then it shut down on the freeway. now it makes a funny sound when u try to start it


If your car to overheat, it is very likely to be for any failure or some electrical defect in the cooling system. With the engine off, check for water leaks in the engine or under it, it could be internal leakage in the gasket, if this happened, I suggest you immobilize the car, but could damage. review of water and coolant levels if they are in the correct, it could also be a fault in the thermostat, water pump or the fan on relay.

Overheating is due to, well, the coolant in the cooling system getting too hot. In a normally operating engine, this should never be a problem. First, check that the coolant level is correct. If it is correct, I would suspect a problem with the thermostat. When the engine is cold, the thermostat closes off coolant flow through the engine until the coolant reaches a pre-determined temperature. When that temperature is reached, the thermostat opens to allow the coolant to circulate at that exact temperature.

Thermostats are known for failing and either not opening or not opening enough at that pre-determined temperature. This causes coolant to get trapped too long in the engine coolant chambers, heating it beyond limits, causing the engine temperature to increase and possibly overheat.

If my Maxima was overheating, I would check the coolant levels and then possibly replace the thermostat. It usually is no more complicated than that.

Took out the thermostat, replaced the radiator, the water is circulating in the radiator but it is still running hot. what do i do next?


Overheating can seriously damage a car's engine if left unchecked. Although overheating simply means that a car's engine temperature exceeds normal operating temperatures, the causes of overheating are varied. What follows is a brief list of some of the most common causes of engine overheating.

    Faulty Radiator
  1. A car that overheats will often have a faulty radiator. A radiator is responsible for cooling hot engine coolant that picks up heat from inside a car's running engine. A radiator "radiates" the heat from engine coolant out into the outside air. A faulty radiator loses its "radiating" effects and allows engine coolant to become overheated, thus rendering it ineffective at adequately cooling and engine.
  2. Faulty Water Pump
  3. A faulty or malfunctioning water pump prevents adequate engine coolant flow and can cause a car to overheat. A water pump serves to pressurize and propel engine coolant throughout a car's engine and radiator to increase the heat-reducing capabilities of engine coolant. A faulty water pump loses its ability to adequately pump and propel engine coolant, and can cause a car to overheat.
  4. Coolant System Leaks
  5. A leaky engine coolant system reduces the level of circulating engine coolant, which increases engine temperature and leads to engine overheating. Radiators, water pumps, and coolant system hoses and seals--all of these coolant system parts can develop leaks, which can result in low coolant levels and engine overheating.
  6. Faulty Thermostat
  7. A car thermostat regulates the flow of engine coolant. A thermostat is a heat-sensitive valve that opens when a car engine reaches a set operating temperature and closes when a car engine is cold and warming up. If a thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant will be prevented from reaching the engine, which will quickly lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage.
  8. Low Engine Oil Level
  9. Engine oil, in addition to lubricating an engine's internal parts, helps to keep engine operating temperatures reduced by eliminating friction within the engine. If engine oil levels are low, friction and heat build up inside an engine, a condition that causes increased engine operating temperatures and can lead to engine overheating.

My son's car overheated. Went to get some anti


The overheating is caused by the sludge. It is very easy to correct this problem. Remove the radiator cap and open the drain valve at the bottom of radiator. If possible, remove the reservoir and flush out with water. Make sure to get all sludge out of reservoir, then reinstall. Once the radiator stops draining, insert water hose (without nozzle) and turn water on. Keep the drain valve open. Run water through radiator until it runs clear. Once it runs clear, start the engine and let it run while keeping the water running through radiator. Allow engine to run until the thermostat opens up. Continue running water through radiator with engine running until the water from drain runs clear. Once you have done that, turn off the engine. Close the drain valve and refill radiator with proper mixture of coolant and water. Once radiator is filled, start engine and let circulate through engine. Coolant level will drop as the coolant starts circulating. Shut off engine and top off radiator. Fill the reservoir with the required amount of coolant. Testing the coolant at least once a year will help prevent this from happening again. Coolant should be replace a minimum of five years, less if coolant bottle specifies.

Overheating


Check coolant level in the rad fluid overflow bottle.
If level is ok, check if the rad fan is working.
Also check if you are getting heat inside the car if you put it on hot with the fan on full. If there is no heat, it is probably the water pump that circulates the coolant

Car overheating no heat coming from vents just cold air


NO heat because there is no coolant flowing throught the heaster core. Car is overheat since there is no coolant circulating in engine water jacket.
Check the coolant, if it is low, then check the oil level. If oil level is high then the head gasket is blown so coolant gets into the engine therefore there is not enough coolant to cool the engine.
If the oil level is OK and coolant level is OK then Need to check 3 following things:
-Bad thermostat is not open causing coolant stagnant then engine overhet.
-Bad water pump is not pumping coolant so there is no coolant circulating to disipate the heat.
-Bad radiator blocks the coolant flow from top to bottom radiator.

Kia Rio overheating although everything seems ok


Possible early signs of a water pump problem. A failing waterpump will circulate coolent when the RPMS are high but when you slow down, so does the waterpump, thereby causing overheating.
