Well is the line ****** to anything electrical on the axle ? and if not it sounds like its just the vent hose if its the vent tie it up out of the way so that no water or anything elese will get in it.

I have 1997 ford 4x4 off road. 4x4 will not engage. checked all vacumn lines and fixed one. All others are good. Dash says its in 4x4 and the on the fly switch works correctly. Actuator seems to be working...


Did you check the vacuum lines with a gauge ? ( not sure how you found the bad vacuum line ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

The black box by the battery is the vacuum reservoir for the 4WD system, it is connected to the engine vacuum system with a check valve. If this was the issue, the vacuum level on the gauge would fluctuate.

I'm trying to service the rear differential but can't find the plug 2 put my gear oil in...help pls...


Look up high, on the differential case. Fill the gear oil there.

When I looked it up on my online resource it says there is a vent hose at the top of the differential, #7.

Rear Axle Axle Housing Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands under the frame. Position a floor jack or a second set of jackstands to support the rear axle housing. If a floor jack is being used, take care when removing the U-bolts to keep the axle from suddenly dislodging.
  2. Remove the rear wheels and drums for clearance and to remove some weight from the axle housing.
  3. If equipped, remove the axle vibration dampener.
  4. Matchmark and remove the rear driveshaft from the pinion flange. Either remove the shaft completely from the vehicle or support it aside from the undercarriage using safety wire, but DO NOT allow the shaft to hang from the slip joint.
  5. Remove the shock absorber-to-axle housing retainers, then swing the shock absorbers away from the axle housing.
  6. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing clips and the backing plates (wheel cylinders). NOTE: When disconnecting the brake lines from the wheel cylinders, immediately plug or cap the lines to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
  7. If applicable, unplug the speed sensor connectors at the junction block.
  8. Disconnect the parking brake cable(s).
  9. Disconnect the axle housing-to-spring U-bolt nuts, washers. U-bolts and the anchor plates.
  10. Remove the vent hose from the top of the axle housing.
  11. Remove the axle with the help of an assistant by moving it to clear the leaf spring, or if desired, the leaf springs can be disconnected from the frame at the rear end to lower the axle down and back, but first refer to the leaf spring procedures for information regarding spring installation and removal.
To Install:
  1. With the help of an assistant, carefully position the rear axle into the vehicle.
  2. Connect the vent hose to the axle housing.
  3. Be sure the housing is properly positioned on the leaf spring, then loosely install the U-bolts, anchor plates, washers and nuts.
    • Tighten the U-bolt nuts in a cross pattern to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) to make sure everything is evenly seated. Then tighten the nuts in steps to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on 1994-95 models or 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) on 1996 and later models.
  4. Remove the caps from the brakes lines then connect the lines and secure them to the axle housing.
  5. If removed, connect the parking brake cable(s).
  6. If applicable, attach the speed sensor connectors to the junction block.
  7. Align and install the driveshaft assembly. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for details.
  8. Install the shock absorbers to the lower mounts, then tighten the mount nuts.
  9. If equipped, install the axle vibration dampener.
  10. Install the brake drums and the tire/wheel assemblies.
  11. Properly refill the brake master cylinder and bleed the hydraulic brake system.
  12. Check the fluid level in the rear axle assembly and add, as necessary. Make sure the vehicle is level when checking and adding fluid.
  13. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.

I need to add 80-90W oil in my rear diff, however, I can't seem to find the plug to pull to add in said oil. can anyone help? What am i missing?

You have vacumn lines the run to your transfer case and then to the vacumn motor on the front axle. you need to check the lines and connections. If vacumn is working fine, then motor on front axle is bad.

i just boought a 1992 Jeep Wrangelr sport with a chevy 305 V8 and its a automatic with a standard 4 wheel drive and i put in 4 wheel drive and the front tires wont move what is wrong????

there is a vacumn motor on thr front passenger side axle that slides an internal collar that connects the inner and out axle halves to lock in the front axle. these are notorious for problems. be the first place to look.

4 wheel drive wiil mot engage


check the hoses on the front axle they are what really engage the 4 wheel to the front axle check for cracks or replace entire line i had that problem before sometimes not enough vaccum pressure

That may be the fuel return line thats why it is using to much fuel. Do you notice fuel odor under your vehicle?

Hose hanging fom front axle where does it go


could be one of two hoses it is either a vent for the front axle which it gets tied up to frame,or it is the vaccum line to the front axle for 4wd to engage front wheels and it runs up to the back side of cruise control and vaccum canister

1986 GMC Jimmy 4WD problem


Rich. There is a vacumn engagement of the front differential. The switch is on the transfer case. There will be a vacumn motor(looks like a curise control unit if you're familiar with them) under the hood with a cable running to the front diff. Make sure it functions when you engage 4wd. Probably does. If not, make sure it is getting vacumn by removing the line. It should **** on your finger when covered. If this all works properly, you could have trouble in the front diff. Don't forget the simple stuff, like CV joints, axle nuts tight, etc. You're driving an 86 so I assume you have a little experience in maintaince. Good luck. TJ
