Not enough into to pinpoint, but your latch is most likely jammed. Sometimes it's as easy as removing a sock or other foreign item that was there when the door was previously closed. The mechanism can become bent if you closed the door hard and had something there to block it from closing or you were rear-ended or backed into a pole.

A common problem with this age of cherokees. The latch mechanism has a couple plastic peices in it that can break easily. Did it perhaps freeze and someone pulled on the handle, or pull the handle when it was locked. It doesn't really take too much pressure to break these after they get 8-10 years old, they get brittle. If you can get it open, get the inside panel off and look at the mechanism, you will see one of two part very visibly broken.

My rear hatch will not open on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee

Your Grand Cherokee has a small pop off panel on the inside of the rear hatch trim...after carefully removing this panel reach inside the opening and you will find a release cable...pull on this cable and the hatch latch should release...then try lubricating the latch at all contact points, and the mechanism itself...if the latch does not release the next try, then you will need to replace this latch...this is a dealer or salvage yard part...your least costly replacement will be through the salvage yard market...some salvage yards are now on-line, and will ship the part to you. Hope this helps.

Back hatch wont open on 96 Jeep GC

if it's still stuck as of today look under the rear bumper in the center,WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR and with a flashlite high up in there you will see a couple of studs with nuts. using a extension and i believe a 13mm socket loosen but do not remove both nuts. pull on the door a couple of times to free it up and then retighten both nuts. now try the door slowly and it worked for will most likely have too repeat this until it operates freely and closes tightly [to keep the elements out].it is not labor intensive and it's worked on my 96 gc twice. best and luck and let the rest of us know how you came out. jeepinjiminy

96 jeep Grand Cherokee tailgate will not open

This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the dealer all the time.
