If it's still stuck as of today look under the rear bumper in the center,WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR and with a flashlite high up in there you will see a couple of studs with nuts. using a extension and i believe a 13mm socket loosen but do not remove both nuts. pull on the door a couple of times to free it up and then retighten both nuts. now try the door slowly and it worked for will most likely have too repeat this until it operates freely and closes tightly [to keep the elements out].it is not labor intensive and it's worked on my 96 gc twice. best and luck and let the rest of us know how you came out. jeepinjiminy

Unfortunately, the only way I know of would be to destroy the inner panel (cheaper than a back door) and get to the lock mechanism from there. I assume you have tried just about everything else at this point.
You can easily locate a used panel in a scrap yard.
Good luck!!

Great!! Sometimes you have to be brave and just go for it!!!
It's so cold where I am that it would break in half even if you removed it the right way!!!

My rear hatch will not open on my 1994 jeep grand cherokee limited. How do i get it to open?

Fairly common problem. First try shooting WD-40 into the opening in the handle then flipping the handle several times. The mechanism tends to stick sometimes and this may free it up. If that doesn't work you will have to crawl in the back and loosten the trim panel enough to get to the latch. You cannot remove the trim panel without opening the hatch but you can get it out far enough to access the latch. Lube the latch and work it back and forth and it should free up enough to open the hatch

Is it the back hatch? Can you pull the rod on the broke side & pull handle at the same time?

Can you please direct me to a site to relace a Back Door handle on a 1999 Jeep Cherekee. The single door in the rear.

You will need a shop manual to see an exploded view of the rear hatch. It really isn't that hard to replace the handle. Find all the screws in the panel, including the ones above and the side of the window. Then take a scraper or similar tool to separate the panel from the door. Once the panel is off, peel the sound barrier off the bottom of door and you will be able to access the back of the handle. From there it's pretty simple task.

My back hatch door wont open. Ive tried just about everything under the sun. How do I get it to open?

Try bracing bottom piece of the plastic that surrounds the rear door handle with one hand while at the same time pulling on the rear door handle to try opening the door. Of course you will try this after unlocking the door with the unlock switch or key cylinder.

The back liftgate does not open even though it is unlocked. I lift the open handle at dothing happens.

I had the same thing on my 96 GC. Turned out the latch and striker were rusted together.

96 Jeep GC Draining battery

I couldn't get my inside lights to go out at all which drained the battery. I ended up taking out the fuse. It works but I have no inside lights (dome, etc) now.

96 Jeep GC Shifter Removal

To remove the shifter handle you have to give the handle a good pull upwards. To put it back, give it a good smack down. The handle just snaps in place.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Electrical problem

You may want to have the wiring harness inspected. A major section under the fuse box(hood on 96 GC 4.0) may become chafed by a close proximity AC gas hose connector. My mechanic said it was slowly chewing at the harness. It caused me fuel pump problems, but your intermittant problem could be similar.
