1996 Chrysler the cold weather when i put it in reverse or drive the car wont move...if i force it, it jumps but the car barely moves and once it finally gets going it revs high before it shifts....seems not to be so bad once the car warms up or after its been driven for a while.

thanks for your input.....I may have to try Lucas until Im able to have this replaced.

  • dolcey_cecil Jan 08, 2009

I will definately get it rebuilt or even have the engine replaced as the car has almost 200, 000 miles on it and it burns some oil as well...but the interior and exterior are in excellent condition and its a convertable. I just really want to try something to get me by until Im ready to go down to one car in the if Lucas might help its worth it to i put that right in where the trans fluid goes...correct?

Assuming that the fluid is full, The symptoms you have indicate internal pressure loss within the unit. As time goes by, wear on the metal contact areas where seals ride, become worn. The seals themselves become somewhat brittle and especially in cold weather, sealing of fluid pressure becomes less than desired. Each time the transmission "flairs" on shifts some burning takes place on internal friction plates & clutches.Even with a fluid change, this condition cannot be corrected. Unfortunately, the unit must be rebuilt or replaced. In some mild cases an additive such as Lucas transmission sealer/conditioner can be used, but generally this is a "bandaid" not a permanent fix!

I generally do not like recomending products, but out of everything I've used, that's the only one I have seen that does anything at all. Remember though, there is no chemical that will replace worn parts.

Yup. Right down the dipstick tube... instructions are right on the bottle. I used it in a fifth ave that was flairing on hi gear shift uphill. It didn't entirely fix the problem but kept it going for over three months. Car had 370k on it and the engine was the only thing left that was in really good shape. Sold it to a guy that ran it in a demolition derby and he won!!! 'Can't get better than that!!

Location of transmission dip stick

Right behind the air box on the 2.4L engine. Note that this model car requires that the engine is off when checking the stick (unlike most cars). The procedure is to first get the engine up to operating termperature then put the car in park, engage the emergency brake, then put the car in drive low, drive 2, neutral, reverse then park. Shut car off then check transmission fluid level. Source - 2010 Chrysler Sebring owner's manual.

On A1996 Chrysler Sebring, How Can You Tell If The Thermostat Is Not Working?

Most of time the termostat will stick open
& in the cold weather you have little heat
when it gets to around 35 degrees

For a small number of unfornutate souls it
may stay closed & overheat & even ruin the
engine because they won't stop using the car

Other than putting it in a pot of water on the stove
to test it

Just install a new one every 6 or 8 years

1996 sebring convertable dies whenever in drive or reverse

The IAC (Idle air control) is mounted on the throttle body,Your PCM uses this device to control idle speed to compensate for engine load, before you decide to replace it try a throttle body cleaning,(just follow direction on the product you decide to use).

My automatic car wont move. I can put it in drive or reverse, but it doesn't move.

Failure of the Auto clutch or a fault in the transmission box. In both the cases the gear box/trans mission must be checked.
Check the activation of the gear stick to ensure that the requested action is seen on the box or is a failure of the link or electrics.

2001 Chrysler Sebring does not shift. I can put it in reverse and drive and it runs, but it does not shift out of first gear. Speedometer still works. Transmission fluid shows that levels are fine.

might be a pluged filter in the transmission check that and it could not hurt to take it to a transmission shop to have them run a trouble code on the tranny

2001 sebring LXi - Steering sticks in center when cold. After driving short while or in warm weather no probblem. The longer is sits or the colder the weather the harder it is to move from center.

What do you mean by stick? It doesn't turn at all or it is just harder to turn?

Also how cold? Posting your question in May, I don't think you mean freezing winter cold unless you live in the southern hemisphere.

For freezing cold temperatures, it is not uncommen to get harder steering especially if you have old contaminated power steering fuild. At freezing cold temperature, power steering fluids gains vescosity and it is harder for the pump to circulate it, but the problem should go away as the engine warms up. I would suggest that you replace you fluid with a fresh approved one.

96 escort manual 5 speed stuck in reverse

Is the stick moving? or is it 'stuck' in the reverse position as well? There are adjustments but it seems more likely that your 'stick' has come unstuck from the gear levers that actually put the gears in the right spot. Have someone look at the transmission while you move the stick to see if the levers are moving and put your response here.
