95 jeep cherokee not starting

I am having intermittent starter problems with my 95 Jeep Cherokee, or so I thought. The first time it acted up I had the starter tested and was fine as well as the solenoid last summer. I cleaned all the cable connections on the starter and replaced the battery posts, and bought a new battery too. Everything was fine until a week ago when it started to do it again. The only way too start it is to have someone turn the key while I go under the vehicle and ark the starter to engage it. This does not always work though. Sometimes I need to have jumper cables hooked up as well because the battery seems to have been drained. I replaced the starter relay in the fuse box inside the engine compartment as well. When I turn the key I do hear the solenoid kicking in but nothing else. Any ideas???

Make sure the battery grounding cable (the small wire from the battery to the body) is intact. If it comes loose you will have this problem.

Check the small wire on the starter to see if you are getting 12v there with the key turned. If you are, then it is possible that the starter (&or solenoid) that checked out good last year is not good now. If no power at small wire, then check neutral safety switch.

Most likely is intermittent in starter solenoid relay

Next most likely is key switch start connection intermittent. a tester will have to be used to find where the power is being lost from the start terminal of ignition switch to starter solenoid pilot connection to the main starter output power from solenoid to starter main contactor.

We have a 2002 Grand Cherokee that we have just bought. Dealer installed a brand new battery because of sluggish starts. In a week the battery is acting weak again, sometimes it starts fine, other times...

I was having the same issue with my 95 GMC. I replaced the battery and alternator. It would start fine at times, at other times it would be sluggish. I finally took the starter off and had it checked. Turns out the starter was bad. When it would get hot, it would act as though the battery was dead. Replaced the starter and it has not acted up again. Have the starter checked. Replace if bad.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 that doesn't overheat but acts like its not getting fuel sometimes. There is no consistency to when it does it, it does not do it all the time. When you push down...

Your indications sound more like a clogged fuel filter or intermittant fuel pump. But it could also be your air supply! When was the last time you changed your air filter and fuel filter. I would start with those two first and then check the fuel pump.

My 95 Jeep GC had a similar problem when I was doing a lot of driving on dirt or gravel roads, and I had to blow out the air filter (with compressed air) often to clear the problem.

Bad solenoid i would guess. Not making a connection there. Any basic wiring and ignition switch problems should be alleviated by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. I would check the solenoid and starter brushes

I'm experieince intermittent starting . One day the jeep will crank & start, the next day when I attempt to start it I get nothing.

Its the starter solenoid. Remove 2 bolts and the lead wire and pull the starter out. most local parts stores can test the starter for you, but if the problem is intermittent it might not show up during their test.

On my jeep, after pulling the starter, I disassembled the solenoid. The actual failure of the solenoid was the electrical contact. I cleaned off the corrosion and have had no problems for 40,000 miles.

It sure sounds like a starter solenoid issue, they act just like that, had exactly the same concern on my car, no crank just clicks under hood, new starter solenoid contacts cured the problem. I don't know if your solenoid is rebuild-able or not, I think it is a Japanese starter so most likely it is.

Jeep doesn't start

I would suggest the starter. The brushes in the starter tend to go bad over time and you may be hitting a dead spot in the starter when cranking it. Another indication that the starter could be a problem would be the engine is cranking over slower.
