The reason is the water pump is driven off the timing belt, extra parts and allot more labor. No the eng does not have to be removed, labor time around 4 hours, parts about, about $125 US for parts, if it is a dealer add $75 US

What would be the cost to replace the water pump in 2001 Mazda MPV at a local shop?

That all depends on the local shop. Labor rates vary from area to area and from shop to shop within the same area.
What I can tell you is this:
The Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the water pump is $167.13 (USD)
The standard labor time required to replace the pump is 2.0 hours.
The cost of antifreeze will also vary depending on the local shop and what brand of antifreeze they use.

I would suggest that you call the local shops for estimates. If they charge more than MSRP for the pump or if they charge more than 2.0 hours labor time to replace it, then you should get another estimate from someplace else.

96 mazda mpv minivan 165k mi. Ran fine until one day just died.Had towed home.3 mech.tried diagnose gave up wouldn't start-turns over-no start. Last mech.replaced timing belt&idle pulley. Still no...

I was browsing unsolved problems. If you still have the problem, I'll try to help you. But it's going to be awhile trying to communicate back and forth. First...Check the engine for spark. Take off a plug wire and stick a screw driver in the wire end and place the metal part of the screw driver next to something on the van that's metal. Have someone crank it over for just a second or two and see if a small spark jumps from the screw driver to the metal part. I'll check back for your answer.

Liftgate Lift Supports MAZDA MPV

One end has a small plate with four bolts in it, you have to remove these. The other end has a "ball and socket". There is a small clip that has to be removed in order to pull the ball out of the socket. Replace the opposite of removal.

Leaking coolant

Check the hoses connections if no help it is water pump/water pump gasket.
You can try radiator stop leak additives, but most likely you will need to replace the gasket and water pump as it will need to be replaced any way in a future.
Hope that helps
Good Luck

Mazda mpv engine idle problem

I had the same problem with my 2002 MPV. I ended up removing the IAC Idle are-control myself, and cleaning it really well (with some air intake cleaner). Put it back together, and it's been running great for the past year.

Not too difficult of a project, I'm no mechanic, but if your good with tools, it's not to bad.
