Question about 2001 Hyundai Accent

I have a car that i need to replace the timeing belt ...i have never done on on this model a hyundai accennt ..it broke this moring ..i need to know where the number one cly is and if i have to remove the pully or not to get this thing fixed ,,,can any one help ,....thnaks,don

    4 cylinder I assume, #1 is the cylinder at the timing belt end of engine. This is an interference engine, this means the valves will most likely be bent or broken.

DISASSEMBLY 1. Lift the vehicle by using of jack.

2. Remove the engine support bracket. (14 mm bolt and 2 nuts, 17 mm bolt) 3. Remove the power steering belt. 4. Remove the air conditioning compressor belt.

5. Remove the alternator belt.

6. Remove the coolant pump pulley.

7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

8. Remove the timing belt cover.

9. Move the timing belt tensioner pulley toward the coolant pump and temporarily secure it.

10. Remove the timing belt.NOTE: If the timing belt is reused, mark with an arrow to indicate direction of rotation (on the front of the engine) to make sure that the belt is reinstalled in the same direction as before. 11. Remove the camshaft from the camshaft sprocket. 12. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and flange. 13. Remove the timing belt idler.

14. Remove the timing belt tensioner.


INSPECTION SPROCKETS TENSIONER PULLEY, AND IDLER PULLEY 1. Check the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley for abnormal wear, cracks, or damage. Replace as necessary. 2. Inspect the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley for easy and smooth rotation and check for play or noise. Replace as necessary.

3. Replace the pulley if there is a grease leak from its bearing.INSPECTION TIMING BELT 1. Check the belt for oil or dust deposits. Replace, if necessary.

2. Small deposits should be wiped away with a dry cloth or paper. Do not clean with solvent.

3. When the engine is overhauled or belt tension adjusted, check the belt carefully. If any of the following flaws are evident, replace the belt with a new one.

REASSEMBLY 1. Install the flange and crankshaft sprocket as shown. Pay close attention to their mounting directions. 2. Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt to the specified torque. Tightening torque Camshaft sprocket bolt:.....80 - 100 Nm (800 - 1000 kg-cm, 59 -74 ft. lbs.) 3. Install the idler and tighten the idler bolt to the specified torque. Tightening torque Idler bolt: .....43 - 55 Nm (430 - 550 kg-cm, 32 - 41 ft. lbs.)

4. Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket (A) and camshaft bearing cap (B). Then align the timing marks of crankshaft sprocket and front case with the No. 1 piston placed at top dead center on its compression stroke as shoved in the illustration.

5. To install the timing belt tensioner, first mount the tensioner, spring, and spacer. Temporarily tighten the bolts. Next, temporarily tighten the tensioner long hole side washer and bolts. Install the bottom end of the spring against the front case as shown in the illustration.

6. Secure the tensioner, positioned towards the water pump.

7. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket. (1) Crankshaft sprocket - (2) Timing belt idler - (3) Camshaft sprocket - (4) Timing belt 8. Install the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket. When the timing belt is installed on the camshaft sprocket, make sure that the tension side is tight. Then, check to ensure that when the tension side is tightened by turning the camshaft sprocket in a reverse direction and all timing marks are in line. 9. Tighten the tensioner bolts. Tightening torque Tensioner attaching bolt: .....20 - 27 Nm (200 - 270 kg-cm, 15 - 20 ft. lbs.) 10. Turn the crankshaft two turns in its operating direction (clock-wise) and realign the camshaft sprocket timing mark with the top dead center position.

11. Then recheck the belt tension Verify that when the tensioner and the tension side of the timing belt are pushed in horizontally with a moderate force approximately 49N (11 lb)], the timing belt cog end is approximately 1/2 of the tensioner mooting bolt head radius (across flats) away from the bolt head center.

12. Install the timing belt cover. Tightening torque Timing belt cover bolt: .....8 -10 Nm (80 - 100 kg-cm, 6 - 7 ft. lbs.) 13. Install the crankshaft pulley. Make sure that the crankshaft sprocket pin fits the small hole in the pulley. Tightening torque Crankshaft pulley bolt: ......140 - 150 Nm (1400 -1500 kg-cm, 103 - 111 ft. lbs.)

14. Install the water pump pulley. 15. Install the alternator belt and adjust the belt tension. 16. Install the air conditioning compressor belt and adjust the belt tension. 17. Install the power steering belt and adjust the belt tension.

I have the solution for you yes you have to remove all your belts and the pullies when thats completed there is a plastic cover that is held down by some bolts remove the cover there you would see you timing belt there is soppose to be a tentioner pully about 2" in diamiter with one bolt slack the bolt the pully hole is off centre so the belt would get slack when you slack the bolt remove the belt and the rest is easy let me know if i helped

Timing belt broke on hyundai sonata 2002 what should I do? The mechanic saya theres a ten percent chance that replacing the belt will solve the problem.


You can have your mechanic pull the valve cover. Loosen the bolts that hold the cam(s) in place and do a compression test. If one or more cylinders is low on compression the motor is junk. If the compression test is fine reinstall the cam and replace the timing belt and you should be good to go.

Timing belt broke at about 55 miles per hour. do you think the valves are bent and what parts do I need to buy other than belt? Oh 2001 hyundai sonada with 2.6L motor. THANKS Jimmy


The 2.4l and 2.5l engines are interference engines, meaning it is highly likely that you bent your valves when your timing belt broke. Besides the timing belt, you may need a new belt tensioner and pulleys. I would replace the water pump too.

Yes, you are just about spot on for the timing belt. Leave the water pump - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Changing the belts does not disturb the water pump so wait until it actually starts to leak, and that could be in years to come.

Scheduled Maintenance Services, for most Cars, has to be done at 30K, 60K, and 90K. Hyundai dealer recommend to replace the timing belt at 60K Service.
If you wait, one of two things could happen: Nothing, or the belt could break and you would be out thousands to repair the engine instead of a $400 hundred to replace just the belt. If it breaks, there will be damage done to the valves and various other internal components, which will not covered under warranty. The problem is that the Dealer would charge you between $700-$800 because they would also replace the water pump at the same time. Or you can buy the timing belt and change it by your self. To do so, you nee the Haynes Repair Manual specific for your car another equivalent.

I assume that you replaced the belt at 60,000 because that was the recommendation in the owner's manual. It needs to be done every 60,000 to keep the engine running fine so you should be giving serious thought to getting it done soon. Hope this helps.

Signs to look for for time to get timing belt looked at. I have just purchased a second hand Hyundai 1993 excel sprint (maual transmission) but service record doesn't show any replacement being done on...


look at mileage. the replacement of the timing belt needs to be done at 60,000 miles. you risk severe damage if this is not done. these belts costs around $300-400 to do.

ALSO IF YOU JUST REPLACED THE HEAD ASSEMBLY MEANS YOU BENT THE VALVES WHEN THE BELT BROKE. TIMMING MARKS ARE DIFFERANT ON MANY MAKES PURCHASE A CHILTON MANUAL FOR THE YEAR AND MAKE OF YOUR CAR THESE MANUALS ARE GREAT AND TAKE THE GUESS WORK OUT OF THE TIMMIMG MARK ISSUE

you need to get a diagrm . try googel . timming marks for your car . if the belt broke while driving more then likley there is engine damage

Can an Alternator Belt installation cause a timing belt problem?


I cannot see any reason for the belt to cause timing belt to jump. unless they messed up something installing belt.might wanna get a second opinion
