The key will not come out of the ignition

The car key will not come out of the ignition, I can stop the engine and start it but when I try to turn the ignition back to remove the key it doesn't make it all the way back and the key remains in the ignition,. I think it is the cyclinder and lock asembley. What are the steps to replace the cylinder and lock assembly.

the key is not in the aux position, teh only button on the steering column is the hazard signal button , turn lever and tilt lever. I can't get it turned back, I think its the cylinder assembly. Does any one know how to get the cylinder assembly off?

I have a 2007 ford and it is doing the same thing. The key will turn the car off and on, but it will not come out of the steering column. There is no release button, it was completely random. The car is working perfectly otherwise... :(

Hello!
I am intrigued, I used to have a similar vehicle and there was a button on the steering column that when press with ignition key in the aux position and a little pressure to take key out allowed it to turn all the way.
It is a little difficult as you have to twist it back whilst pressing the button! But it should work.
Hope this FixYa's problem?
Good Luck!

O.K. I'm still trying, Is the vehicle in Neutral/Park with button on auto stick out so the lever is locked in park? hand brake or foot brake on?
I had a Mitsubishi Pajero Auto Trans and the button on the stick shift which you press before selecting forward or reverse gears was stuck in very slightly and I could not get the keys out.
Took me 45 minutes outside a market to sort it.
Hope this does it this time, I'm sorry but I don't know how to remove your ignition barrel.

2000 Hyundai Excel ignition lock problem

What most people refer to as the "Ignition switch" is really the "cylinder lock", that when turned with the key, operates the actual "ignition switch".
The switch causing your problem is inside the steering column, and the column needs to be at least partly disassembled to access it.

My car turns over good, acts like it might turn on then continues to turn. I figure it might be fuel filter since low fuel light had come on.Or could it be th fuel pump got hot and is not working properly?

common problem is turning car off with engine not reaching normal operating temp and floods engine. try this. DE-CHOKING PROCEDURE WHEN ENGINE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START
If the engine does not start, try the following procedure to start the engine using the de-choke mode.
Failure to do so may aggravate the no start condition.
1. Depress and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank the engine for 7-8 seconds. (This will clean out any unburned fuel from the combustion chamber)
2. Release the ignition key to stop cranking.
3. Release the accelerator pedal and start the engine. If the engine starts while performing Step 1 the engine will rev up. Immediately release the ignition key to stop cranking and remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.
^ Do not keep holding the ignition switch in the START position over 10 seconds if the engine does not start. This may result in a weakened or dead battery.
^ Avoid racing the engine or sudden take off right after starting the engine.
^ If the engine still fails to start following the De-choking procedure, have your vehicle inspected by your Mazda Dealer.

for your info there is a recall for this problem. contact mazda.

You either have a bad solenoid on your starter OR a bad ignition switch as these are the only two things that can cause the symptom you describe... I lean to the solenoid first, RARELY does an ignition switch sieze up in the start position but it is a possibility. Several national chain parts stores can test the starter for you (GM starters have the starter solenoid mounted directly to the starter and you need to remove the starter to get to it, so you would take the whole unit in to test it... REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!)

1999 Toyota Corolla CE. For about 2 months, the engine does not start immediately. I need to turn the ignition key several times until it starts. Each time when I turn the key, a clicking sound happens...

it sounds like either your having a short at the starter or the ignition switch is bad, I am leaning towards the issue being the starter, usually when the ignition switch is going bad there will be no click,

As soon as I turn the key to the on position, the engine turns over

The problem is either in the mechanism that pushes the rod that activates the ignition switch from the key lock cylinder, or the ignition switch is defective.

1986 Thunderbird Starting problem, Turn key starts, let go of key stops

Replace the ignition tumbler--i.e. get a new ignition set with new key. This will require removing the plastic trim around the steering column and removing the old ignition set. It's a good DIY project, but you should get a Haynes manual for 83-88 T-Bird/Cougar. Try going to a junk yard for the replacement part. Crown Vics, Cougars, Grand Marquis', Lincolns all have the same type of set for those years.
