This is my subaru impreza gx (non turbo) it's just developed a ticking/tapping noise I've checked the oil and that was fine. The noise isn't a constant thing. It seams to get faster when accelerating

sounds like you my have spun a rod bearing? take off plug wires one at time to hear which cylinder the noise is coming from. the noise in that cylinder should decrease once it has no spark. my be looking at crank rebuild

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD THE VALVES SET?

  • Jonah Oneal Nov 19, 2012

need do valve lash adjustment with engine cold. if you have 3.3 engine does not require valve lash adjustment.if valve lash cant be obtain or cant adjust could have worn rocker arms or bad lifters.

You possibly have a valve tap, do you rip on your motor a lot? If so you may have messed up the valve gauge and it could possibly be hitting the piston at a minuscule amount just enough to make a tapping noise.

SOURCE: Oil Change queries SUBARU IMPREZA RS 2.5 2005 MODEL non turbo

I am confused - I have a simple query and logged on to your site as you offered free advice! Do you not offer the service as described on your website. I definitely don't need a team of experts to answer my very simple question.

Subaru instructions

Your timing is fixed, controled by the computer and non-adjustable. Check spark plugs and plug wires. Is your check engine light on? If so, you need to check the code and repair acordingly. If no light, then you may have headgasket problems. Head gaskets will do just what you say is wrong and is a tipical Subaru problem.

New starter on my 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback sport is going out again. I recently bought my impreza. The check engine light came on a few times and 5 days later it would not start, I tapped on the starter...

Sounds like a bad starter. If your car is turbocharged then you might have gotten a starter meant for non-turbo application. Same thing happened to me but I couldnt get the right starter. Heat is the no.1 enemy of cars. Turbos run way hotter than non-turbo. If this is a heat related problem. I would invest in a factory starter from dealership. (worth every penny). Or just simply heat wrap it.

I HAVE A 2006 SUBARU IMPREZA AND THE ENGINE HAS A TICKING NOSE

Its probably your lifters. They get gunked up and start sticking. Get some Valve Medic or similar valve treatment and add it to the oil, it should help disolve that gunk.

Impreza 2000 turbo uk model

Yes, there IS a known oiling problem:

Subaru TSB 02-103-07
Applicability: All Turbo Equipped Vehicles
Subject: Turbocharger Oil Supply Mesh Screen
http://store.forcedperformance.net/merchant2/graphics/subaru_oil/02-103-07.pdf

"... If clogged or restricted, it will reduce or cut off oil supply to the turbo, resulting in failure. ..."

Your turbo may be toast! ***ouch!***
I have found more info on 2004 - 2007 models, but may or may not be applicable to your 2000 Impreza. I am not familiar with the the UK model differences, but if yours has AVCS use your favorite internet search engine to search for "Subaru AVCS" or "Subaru TSB". Good luck!
