Question about 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier

Chevy cavalier 2005 speedometer stuck not working

My speedometer is stuck or not working on my chevy cav 2005 a mechanic says it is a sensor where can i find it and fix it my self or is it possibly a fuse? help anyone? please.. 1998 cavalier speedo jumps from 0 to100 when driving down the road and the nexted time its ok
I have a 1991 chevy cavalier and I have two questions, first where can we find the stepper motor since my speedometer goes up and down registering the wrong speed? second, I have a four guage cluster (speedometer, oil, temp and fuel) and I found a five guage cluster on ebay which includes the four guages I mentioned and includes a tachometer, my question is will it be ok if I just take out the old cluster(w/o tach) and replace it with the other(with tach)? Or do I have to make some modifications on it before I could change it?
Sorry, I think that was three questions already..
Anyways, thanks so much for any help!!!

Ok so you're saying I have to rewire the connections so the tach could work? I have electronic installation kit when I installed the cd changer on. I'm still not sure what steps to do, do i have to remove the old cluster, rewire connections and plug the new cluster; or remove the old cluster and just plug in the new cluster at once without doing connection modifications, then meddle with the fuses?

Say all I did was to remove the old and plug in the new one, do you think all guages will work except the tach? as long as all the other guages work Im all set..

Thanks so much for your help..

    Ok! here's the real problem!

My 1991 chevy cavalier's speedometer reads the wrong speed whenever im
driving. When I'm in a local rd running 35 mph, the speedometer
sometimes reads zero but after about 15 minutes it goes up to 20 and
becomes unstable (goes up and down) but im pretty sure it doesnt reach
the right speed. Also when im on the highway running 65mph the
speedometer only registers 50mph and again unstable. I tried changing
the cluster but that did not solve the problem. Can you help me with
this? Thanks so much!! PS. since the speedo registers the wrong speed,
the odometer is getting affected by it.

    Thanks again..

That Cluster will work But, You will have to get an Installation kit if you want the Tach to work. Everything else will hook up the Same. You have a Distribution Box (Fuse Box) Under the Hood on the Drivers Side, There is a Fuse in it for the Speedo. Inside the Cover to the Box is the Fuse Diagram or in the Back of the Owners Manual.

As long as the Guage Cluster that you are Putting in in Place of the Old one is the Same Year model or Close you should be able to Just Plug it up. Let me know if you run into any Problems. P.S. Before you install the NEW Cluster, Make sure to replace the Light Bulbs on the Back of the Cluster so that you do not have to Rip it apart Again!

You need to replace the Speedometer Cable. Not an Easy job But, Unfortunately Neccessary at this Point! Just follow the Cable through the Dash and Firewall to the Other End. Let me know if you have any more Problems!

My chevy cavalier 2005, the speedometer and temperature gauge stopped working. I'm not sure whats wrong and don't want to get ripped off at the dealers. Please help if there is something I can check...

Is the ck engine light on If so take to a auto parts store that will ck the car for codes and that will tell you if the speed sensor is working or not> If the speed sensor is not working the ck engine light will be on and the car will have stored that code.If there are no codes that it is most likely the cluster for the speedometer not working . Now the temperature guage not working is the needle spunaround backwards past the stop If so that replace the cluster .If not than it needs to be ckd for a bad tempature sensor. This should also set a code and turn the ck engine light.

Chevy cavalier 2005 speedometer stuck not working

This is most likely not a speed sensor problem, I see this a lot on 03-05 Cavalier instrument clusters and it's always the same. It's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board and it can be fixed. Check out this page for more about how to get it fixed - cavalier speedometer fix

If your odometer is working and your speedo needle doesnt indicate correctly then your problem is the stepper motor in the cluster. I have repaired a lot of instrument clusters....cost is 105.00

Google used speed cluster. Buy one and have it installed. I found one for $112 shipped and installed for $30 bucks. Sorry if I posted twice. Good Luck.
