1998 mercury mystique odd starting problem

Thanks to StormStrikes for helping me with the ''misfire'' problem on my 1998 mercury mystique v6. The problem was a bad plug wire. Engine runs great now. -------------I am hoping that someone can help me with another problem that has everyone stumped.
Again it is in regards to a 1998 mercury mystique v6. Last year i filled the car up with gas and it didnt click off and gas poured all over the ground. I got in the car and the fuel pump stopped halfway through the starting cycle. What i mean is normally when you turn the ignition key you hear the fuel pump for 3 seconds prior to engine start up. Instead it would kick in for a second or so and the car would not turn over,no starter engaging. nothing. But i had all my lights and the battery was new. After turning the ignition key on and off several times the fuel pump would kick in for its 3 second cycle and the car would start as normal.
In the beginning this would happen probally 50% every time i started the car and now it does this maybe 10% of the time. ''motorweek'' told me i should not even hear the fuel pump before start up but all the mechanics and even the local ford-mercury dealership said it ''is'' normal to hear the fuel pump for 3 seconds before start up.
I do not think it is the fuel pump. The car does not starve for fuel at all between idle to redline. It runs strong. Could it be a bad ground? If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

I i were you i would check the ignition. it sounds like you are only connecting some of the time. And yes it is very normal to hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key to the on position.

Do you need to replace the timing belt when you change a water pump for a 1998 mercury mystique v6?

You don't have to replace it but you have to take the belt off to remove the water pump for the extra $30.00 i would recomend changing the belt too, unless the belt has been changed less then 20,000 miles ago .

I have a 98 mercury mystique v6, When I try to start,

just a stab in the dark here. maybe starter drive bad, or starter sellinoid, or the worst case teeth gone on one section of flywheel. i would say its either starter drive or starter sellinoid. either case starter has to be removed. hope this helps. OLD SCHOOL.
