you have a bad sending unit inside your tank.
the resistance of the potentiometer inside is broke on the half tank part.
you have to replace it.

The fuel pump and the sensor is altogether as one assembly. So if you buy the pump you would also be buying the sensor. Just for your information the pump is located in the gas tank under the bed, so you have two ways to change it. One is take the bed off (which is a lot easier if you have a full gas tank). But if its empty than use a jack to lower the tank down from underneath the truck. I hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 2001 Pontiac Montana and the intake manifold gasket. This is a major problem with these 3.4L engines, if you are in the states I'm pretty sure there is a class action law suite against GM for this. I had my manifold gasket replaced and it was about $1000 CAD. You need to get your vehicle looked at right away as this could cause major engine damage, coolant will leak into the engine and soon enough you will be replacing that too. Good Luck

Hi,
This sounds like the sender unit in the fuel tank is worn or possibly a corroded/ bad earth from the unit itself.
There should be an inspection plate above the fuel tank removal of this should reveal the sender unit and connections, if not can you see on top of it? make sure all connections are clean and not gunged up with corrosion. Try spraying Wd40 or similar around the area whilst wiggling the plugs/wires.
Good Luck, Please press the Blue Button to appraise my FREE! Effort.
Thank You!
