Gear shift locks in park and will not move. Had vehicle toured to ford or lincoln dealer 2 times and was told they can not find problem but did get gear shift released by replacing it once but still have similar problems.. Now at home again with same problem. Learned from computer how to release but can not get problem fixed. 8,000 miles remaining on ford extended warranty. Dealer said it can not be fixed.

When you say the vehicle "won't go into gear," do you mean you cannot move the lever out of PARK, or do you mean that when you move the lever out of PARK the transmission will not engage?
If the lever will not move out of PARK, check your BRAKE LIGHT fuse, your BRAKE LIGHT switch, and the SOLENOID at the shift mechanism.
If your lever moves out of PARK easily (too easily), it is possible that your shift linkage has broken or come loose.
If your lever moves out of PARK normally but the transmission does not engage, it's time to have the car towed to the transmission repair shop.

this sounds a bit unusual, with regards to the steering being locked and the gear will move is i think where the problem lies as when starting vehicle the steering lock is taken off so there may be a problem with the steering lock mechanism that also affects the gear change ,i would have the ignition switch checked out for operation as regards cost this procedure should take approx 60-90 mins so ask what the hourly rate is at the repair shop you choose if the ignition switch needs replacing shop around on the internet as you will get one for at least 50% less than the dealer will charge , be very clear with the repair shop what you want them to do which i would suggest is to report their findings before going ahead a changing parts etc that way you have control or the costs and can make a decision on whether having it repaired is the righr thing to do or whether trading in for a new vehicle might be a better financial choice taking into account age/mileage/condition of your vehicle .sorry if this is a bit long winded but wanted to give you as much info as poss so you can make an informed decision and not pushed into something by the repair shop

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

shifter needs to be inspected. Its quite possible that The
shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.







There
are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and
suddenly this shifting problem occurred then its shifter
assembly alignment issue.

Problem with shift interlock system ,maybe ! This is a safety system that will not allow the gear selector to be move from park unless driver is pushing on the brake pedal . Has a locking solenoid in shifter assembly . Is your vehicle column shift or on the floor console shift ? Has a electrical brake switch ,wiring ,an the solenoid . Could also have a control module involved ,GEM . Don't know for sure without looking up in factory service repair manual .

Brake interlock, your foot needs to be on the brake to shift out of park. If you are doing that and you still can't shift then check all your fuses, the lock circuit may be out
