Voltage regulator location on a 86 dodge aries k 2.2 Is it in the computer?I dont see an external one anywhere?

Most likely it is built into the alternator. The field is just a ground wire to the block. I do remember though. That there was a black bar across the back of the alternator, that would go bad and cause the alternator not to work. Had a wire going to it, one coming out(both big), And 2 leads that bolted to the alternator.

Replacing voltage regulator

mostly the voltage regulator is in the unit that holds the brushes in the back of the alternator . Sometimes depending on the make the regulator can be found in the engine compartment. Best to contact an auto electrician to get the right regulator. and where it is located

Ammeter reads 18V with engine running.

I'm assuming you mean the charging voltage indicator. This is an indication of an incorrect charging voltage (too high, should be from 12.5 to 14 volts). This problem is most likely caused by a bad charging voltage regulator. There are two variations of the location of the regulator: 1) regulator is outside of the alternator and located on right side of the engine compartment on the wheel-well, below the starter relay or 2) The regulator is inside the alternator (in which case you'd have to replace the alternator).

Does an 86 olds cutless have an external voltage regulater

i believe it is built in the alternator, an external regulator would be a box on the fender well which you dont have on a 86

86 bronco2

86 is a split year, some have an external regulator, it would be on the inside of of the fender on the passenger side, so since u say you don't see it then your voltage regulator is mounted on the outside back of the alternator with a oval connector going to it, it is black and silver
