clearpixel.gif Note: Before top dead center - When inspecting idle speed,
set parking brake & block drive wheels.
Curb idle speed (850 RPM).

If your car does not have a ditstributor. You cannot adjust timing.
You need a timing light and point it on the timing marks on the crank pulley.

My father's toyota hilux with a 3y engine was overhaul, but now it fails to start. Please can you help with the timing setting of the engine.

Are you sure the timing is bad?
a Chilton manual can tell you how to set the timing in great detail and it is a very good idea to have it around. They are not that expensive.

If the car starts but spits out of the carb when you accelerate then check the CATALYITC CONVERTER. If the car overheated and sent coolant to the CAT then it melts the inside and blocks the exhaust.

Hi this is a picture of the back cam. make sure the lift side has A up and the right side says E up you can see both of them in the picture i posted. You can order a set of cheap timing tools on ebay. Its very important to set the timing right if not be looking for a new motor due to the fact you only have ONE shot to set it .

I agree it sounds like the magnet for the cam sensor, or a problem in the wiring harness.
I don't think the engine will run with the cam sensor disconnected since it needs that signal to set base timing. It can run without the crank sensor once the engine starts.
There is a slight chance the timing chain is getting loose and affecting cam timing too. You may be loosing plastic teeth on the cam gear.

Have a 2001 dodge intrepid replaced water pump and car wont start getting code p 1684

The P1684 just states the that the battery has been disconnected withing the last 50 starts. As far as the no start, make sure you have you have the timing marks set right. Make sure everything is hooked back up ( I believe the cam sensor is in the timing cover). Problems like this 9 times out of 10 are something basic that has been overlooked so retrace your steps and double check.

AFTER REPLACING TIMING BELT,VAN HAS A ROUGH IDLE. NEED TO MAKE SURE TIMING IS SET RIGHT.

when setting the timing make sure that the marks are aligned. You may also need to use a strobe light focused on the timing belt to see if you need to adjust the timing. Also check if you may have knocked the crank sensor off its location.

How to install timing belt on 1998 vw beetle

Instructions
Things You'll Need: · Set of quarter-inch drive sockets Quarter-inch drive ratchet Set of half-inch drive sockets Half-inch drive air gun Set of metric wrenches Special tools for holding camshaft timing #2065-A and injection pump #2064

Step 1

Remove the accessory drive belts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the No.1 cylinder is atop, dead center, with the flywheel timing marks aligned.

Step 2

Install the special tool setting bar (#2065-A) on the rear of the camshaft. If it does not fit, turn the crankshaft once more and line up the timing marks again in the hole of the transmission housing.

Step 3

Insert locking pin #2064 into the injection pump to hold it in position. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut and allow the tensioner to move away from the belt. Loosely tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the top guide pulley and the timing belt.

Step 4

Make sure that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up and that the camshaft setting bar and injection locking pin are in place. Loosen the camshaft bolt a half turn and tap the sprocket with a soft mallet to loosen it off its taper. The sprocket should move freely. Install the top guide pulley and torque to 18 foot pounds of torque.

Step 5

Install the new timing belt, starting on the right side and working counterclockwise. Keep the tension on the right nontensioned side. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Using the two-pin wrench, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise until the notch and raised mark are aligned. Torque the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot pounds of torque. Make sure the flywheel timing mark is still aligned.

Step 6

Torque the camshaft bolt to 33 foot pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump and remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment on the flywheel. Make sure that the setting bar can be inserted easily and that the injection pump locking pin can be inserted. Install all components in reverse order of removal and torque the crankshaft bolt to 18 foot pounds of torque.

My Recommendation - Pay an authorized VW mechanic $500 to replace the timing belt water pump an tensioner, and sleep better knowing that the job was done right. Just too many places for a novice car mechanic to screw up. jQuery('.article ol .image').each(function(i,e){ var $this = jQuery(this); $this.find('img').error(function(){ jQuery(this).remove(); $this.remove(); }); });

Setting timing

Get a 17 mm socket and a ratchet with a short extension.Behind the drivers side front wheel theres an acces hole that will allow you to turn the crank pulley with the ratchet. You dont need to remove the wheel or jack the car up to do this.Make sure trans is in neutral and parking brake set. Now,turn crank pulley counter clockwise until the TDC mark is lined up with the pointer on the plastic timing belt cover. It will be a single notch on the rear edge of the pulley, the 3 notches together are for ignition timing.Like this         I     I I I    It may be hard to see but its there.Wipe pulley off or feel with fingernail and you'll find them.Remember to use the single notch by itself. Now look on the cam gear and make sure TOP is at twelve o'clock and the two notches on the left and right are horizontal with the cylinder head. You're done.

Ignition timing

It is not necessary to set the timing on a computer controlled engine. I think you mean to ask where the wires go. First, the motor is numbered down the left bank (that is standing in front of the car looking at the motor) 1 - 2 - 3, and the right bank is numbered 4 - 5 - 6. The coil pack is setting sideways and it numbers (left to right) 5 - 6 - 4 (front row) 1 - 2 - 3 (back row).
