My o/d light comes on at start-up but when I start driving and I press the button it doesn't light up or engage. 1999 nissan maxima GXE

Could be a problem inside the transmission. The light on at startup is usually a bulb test. keep in mind the light would only come on when you switch the overdrive off. it is on all the time otherwise.

I have a 1995 Maxima. For in town driving is the overdrive to be on or off?

this is really not a problem, overdrive will only be used if car speed is up to speed for it to engage and that is how its designed. If you pull a trailer or if you are in a hilly area and your car keeps shifting in and out of overdrive you should turn off untill more flater terrain, otherwise it doesn't hurt your vehicle.

When am I supposed to engage the overdrive. I have it on all the time, will that damage the auto.

leave the overdrive on all the time.will not damage anything
unless towing a trailer or similar, or driving in steep hilly and winding roads that cause the overdrive to change in and out

My 2000 nissan maxima gle just had a rear main seal installed and now it won't shift into overdrive

It sounds like who ever did the rear seal did not hookup the electric overdrive on the transmission.

Overdrive light and airbag/abs lights flashing

Sounds like an ECM going out. The systems being effected are not related and usually only connected though the ECM. Have it checked at the dealer.
