Question about 1988 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

88 dodge dakota has rough idle and stalls at slow down.

The truck idles up and down and when slowing down to stop it stalls but only after truck is at full operating temp. I replaced the idle position sensor but that made no difference. The solinoid on the drivers side of the throttle body which i belive is fast idle at start up fluctuates in and out during rough idle.If i unplug this four wire harness going to the solinoid it seems to run fine and won't stall but i have no fast idle at startup.

Change/thoroughly clean the idle control solenoid. It may be sticking and causing rough idling.
Cleaning it is unlikely to be more than a short-term solution.

Car running rough at random when accelerating and also idle drops suddenly when slowing down and often completely stalls out when I stop. Smells strongly of gasoline when it stalls/almost stalls but I

This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

88 dodge dakoya v-6 stalls at stops and idles really rough.

Hi Mosso, Yes it definitely could be. Reset it with a stroboscopic timing light. It could also be leaking vacuum hoses so check them all for tightness of fit and make sure there are not any which are damaged. Regards John

After 5-10min driving around the truck struggles to run smooth. as i come to a stop or even slow down 5 out 0f 10 times it stalls out. the restarts is good, but still struggles to run. I have to rapidly...

Check the TPS Sensor on throttle body (throttle position)

Also the Air Idle Control Solenoid at the base
of throttle body, on side

Spark plugs strangely make a difference on the dakota,
clean rotor & cap

There is no timing adjustment

Never move your distributor,it is for
injector timing

Truck dies when i stop or slow down

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
