Sounds like a voltage regulator problem

  • Anonymous Nov 17, 2012

Is the voltage regulator separate from the alternator? If so, where is it located? Thanks/

SOURCE: 1996 toyota tercel

there is no repair manual published for the 1996 tercel, not from chilton, not from haynes.

the 1994 tercel and the 1996 corolla are both covered in haynes manuals, that's the closest we can get. both have some of the same systems, gotta pick and choose.

there is an expensive professional repair manual, published by toyota, i think, that's what mechanics buy for shops. it costs hundreds, and is not easy to buy.

SOURCE: need to find specks on cylingder head for 1996 toyota tercel

The cylinder head bolt torque is a 2 step process.

First: Torque all of the bolts to 45 Nm (450 Kgf-cm or 33 ft lbs.)
Replace any head bolt that will not torque to the above specs.

Second: after all ten bolts are torqued to the above specs, the head bolts are then "Torqued to Distance"...

Starting at the center bolts, retorque all ten bolts an additional 90 degrees.

Hope this helps, the graciousness of a FixYa rating would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. My 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE turned off while going 70 mph on the freeway. The battery light came on 20 minutes prior and before shutting off the navigation screen went black then all the warning...

When you start your car the battery starts it. When the car is running the alternator makes the voltage to run your car and it recharges your battery. If alternator is not putting out enough voltage then your battery has to run your car and it will get to a point the car shuts down due to lack of voltage. The cars computer now day will starting shutting down thing which use voltage if the car does not need it to run when the voltage get to low. My 2006 cobalt, I lost the radio, A/C and even the power steering electric assist motor when voltage got low. Charge your battery, crank your car turn on headlights and check voltage at the battery it should be over 14 volts even up to over 15 on some cars. If not you may have alternator problem or wiring problems.

Does a 1996 toyota tercel have an external voltage regulator

Looks like the regulator can be replaced. But it is on the backside of the alternator. You may not be able to find it.. Without buying the alternator.

1996 Toyota tercel doesn't start doesn't crank

Well you may have more than one problem.
As far as cranking, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter and trace back to the key switch. The key switch could cause both problems. There is also a neutral safety switch that could cause it not to crank.
You could also have a bad ground connection between the engine and body.

Battery light goes on and off

Your running the alternator on borrowed time as its a matter of time before the battery dies and needs replacement along with the old alternator. The light is indicating something wrong with the electrical system. A simple test at your favorite auto store capable of checking the battery/alternator system will reveal what's wrong or you can perform some simple measurements of battery voltage to determine the issues - the alternator is due for replacement and possibly the battery if it was allowed to operate with the battery light going on and off for a long time otherwise the alternator is on its last legs unless you can find loose connections on the alternator.

Usually alternators wear out; the brushes wear down after so many thousands of miles where they begin to lose physical contact and intermittently turn on the low voltage indicator warning you of electrical power problems. Measuring at the battery terminals should show battery voltage around 12.5v+, engine idling 13.5v+, above idling 14.3v+. If the last two voltages don't vary above battery voltage then the alternator is faulty. Remove it for testing before replacement. With so many miles on it, its due for replacement.

I have 1989 toyota tercel. The alternator will run the car's electrical system but will not charge the battery.I have a new battery and alternator.what the problem?

Check the charging rate of the car's electrical system....it should read at idling 14volts.If its not or is just reading 12volts or low means the alternator is not charging, Replace the alternator and get the old battery charged or if its more thn 17months old replace it.
Hope this helps!

1996 Toyota Celica GT: car loses power and stalls out.

Check alternator voltage at back of alternator ( big wire ), if you have no less then 13.5 volt's, alternator is ok, check for blown alternator fuse or break at wire from back of alternator to starter then to battery, could be a bad fuse link at starter.

1997 toyota 4-runner, My battery dash light is on. The battery is good.

The battery light on at the dash indicates a problem internal in the alternator. Normally, when the alternator is producing sufficient voltage (14.4 VDC), the light stays off. When the alternator is NOT producing sufficient voltage, the light comes on. Check the voltage at the battery with a voltmenter with the engine running. If you have less than 12 volts, you both need an alternator.
