Question about 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Fuel gauge erratic

I have a 2005 grand prix gtp and the fuel gauge is erratic. The dealer says that the fuel gauge sender needs replaced. I ordered and have the sender. Does the fuel tank need to be dropped down to replace the sender? Are any special tools needed to do this job? I am not very familiar with this automobile, but I am a service manager for a large ag dealer and have access to most tools I think that I need to do this.

I have a 05 3800v6 and i find the fuel gauge is doing the same thing, would the sending unit cause other problems. my car bucks and stalls some times and seems to be harder on fuel then it should be.

Yes the tank has to come out. It really doesn't require any special tools. You should have everything you need at the ag dealer. Try to get as much fuel out of the tank before you start so it is easier to work with.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Gas gauge goes up to full and after a bit, down to total empty. What is causing it to do that?

Hello hawky 32: My name is Roger and I will help with your answer. The most likely culprit is the fuel sender unit in the fuel tank. This is replicable but requires the removal of the fuel tank in order to replace the unit. Also when the fuel pump module is replaced you will also have a new sender unit with the pump. You might want to investigate the cost of the sender for the fuel Gage verses the fuel pump module. The fuel pump unit you can buy at the parts store. The sender unit is most likely a dealer item only. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Fuel gauge doesn't work. is there a workaround for this, or does the entire fuel pump assembly have to be replaced? any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the replacement OEM pumps come with the sender but a few of the senders are sold seperately. The easiest way to determine this on your car is to call any GM parts department with the LAST 8 digits of your VIN# and they can tell you if the sender is available by itself. Either way, the pump has to come out of the tank and if you are near the 100k mark in miles then I would very strongly suggest replacing the pump module at the same time. I have seen the occasional dash problem that affects fuel gauges but it's very rare. Usually a failing sending unit will partially work for a while but get more and more erratic until it can't be trusted at all or just quits completely.
