How do you know if cv axle is going bad - 2001 Ford Escape

Turning them by hand to feel play

Pulling forward & backwards with the wheels
turned in either direction, to listen for popping
sound, is how you tell inside from outer joint

The entire axle gets replaced if a joint or boot goes

You can tell from noise while driving at different speeds

Only the guys at a trans shop have that kind of diagnostic
experience

Can I drive my 01 Isuzu trooper without front cv axles? How bad is it to drive on them if they need replaced?

It can damage the parts that keep the tires on our car if you don't get the CV axles replaced. You should take your car to a mechanic to replace the axles.

Have a plymouth breeze, every time I turn left it was making a loud clicking noise, now it sounds like a really bad loud scrubbing noise when I turned and drive starting last night. So it I cant drive it....

Probably a bad CV joint on one of your drive axles to the front wheels. You have two drive axles coming out of the transaxle, one to each front wheel, and both have an inner CV joint where they enter the transaxle, and an outer CV joint where the axles fit into the wheel hub. (A CV joint is really like the old U-joints, serving the same purpose.) A clicking noise on turning is usually a badly worn outer CV joint. The cheapest fix is to buy a remanufactured half-shaft for your car. That is the axle shaft with both CV joints at each end inspected and reconditioned with new grease and CV boots installed. You need to know which side is bad before buying. The half-shaft is sold ready to install. Someone with good mechanical skills will need to remove the old one and replace it with the new reconditioned axle shaft, or half shaft as they are also called. The last time I bought one (about two years ago) the cost was reasonable- about $65.00. That is less than the cost of one new CV joint.
Hope this helps you out.

Front end makes noise when turning. Could this be tire rods or axle problem. I had motor mounts replaced when the mounts went bad could this the moving motor cause damage to front wheel area?

yes, popping when turning is usually caused by worn out CV joints in axles. Check for torn CV boots. When a boot tears, dirt gets into the joint a wears it prematurely. If you find tears, it is easiest to replace the whole half-axle than to fix the CV. Let me know if you have more questions.

2005 Toyota Corolla - steering column crunches

the reason why your hearing this noise is because your CV joints on your car is bad. CV joints go bad when the CV boots have a rip or a tear in them and little pebbles and debree from the road get into the bearings of your axle. Dont worry its not like this big expensive ordeal. What I do suggest is dont even ask about replacing the CV joints because it usually costs the same or even more than just replacing the axles. I know it sounds horrible expencive but its not. When you take your car in tell them you want to replace your front right and left CV axles, because there are two of them in the front. Most people think you only have 1 axle in the front but you technically have two. I find the cheapest way to do it is ordering the axles online. Then finding a job with the cheapest labor rate to put them on.

Go to www.autopartswarehouse.com. Select the year, make and model of the car. Then scroll down to the Driveshaft and Axle section and click on Axle Assembly and order the parts from there. I made it a little easier on you, I already looked it up for you and the price

right axle is $99.95
left axle is $99.95

Now you say you get the crunching when you turn left and right so you will need both the left and right axles. Remember that the longer you take to replace them, that crunching noise will continue to get louder and louder

Grinding noise when turning a bend

if the grinding happens when you turn the wheel while moving and not while turning the wheel when stationary chances are you have a bad cv axle. you can check it by locating the cv boot on the front axles. (a rubber piece that goes around the outside of the cv axle. move and expand the rubber boot and check for cracks in it generally they go bad when the boot is cracked or torn and dirt and sand gets in the teeth of the cv axle and wear it out.
