On all audi 80s I have seen, the central locking system is driven by a vacuum pump. If the systm does not work it can either be the pump, or a problem with the wiring, or even just a fuse.

The vacuum pump should be located underneath a round cover under the carpet in the right front of the trunk. If this gives any sound when you lock/unlock the doors, there is probably something wrong with either the pump or the vacuum lines. If the pump has no sign of life you should troubleshoot with a multimeter to find out if it is the pump or the wiring that is defect.

Central locking works based on electronic motors. If it is not working it could be anything to do with a loose connection to a faulty circuit.

The central locking air-pumps often fail on these models, or leaks develop in the air lines of the system. They aren't typically easy to repair when leaks develop as they must first be traced, but if you are lucky, then it may just be a pump issue.

As far as the central locking issue, it sounds like you need to replace your central locking pump. You can buy them online.
I have a 95 A6 and I am in the process of looking for a new central locking pump.
The part number may be 4A0 862 257 J, that is what it is for me.
There are directions online as to how to change this yourself once you get the part. If you buy from the dealership the part is $500.
Be thankful your child locks weren't engaged. We haven't been able to open our back doors since the pump went out.

Central locking

This seems like a vacuum leak somewhere. Find the pump itself, and after you lock or unlock the doors, with the pump running, Pull the vacuum line from the pump and plug the pump output with your finger. This should shut the pump off. If this works, you then have to trace the vacuum lines and find the leak. Most likely pinch points anr in the door boots. (have this car been in an accident?) If so, check in the damage areas. good luck!
