Yes, some auto part stores can check your codes for free and reset the light, then you will know what caused the code and be able to figure out weather it's some thing serious or not. (some times something as simple as a loose gas cap will cause the light to come on)
hope this helps........thanks for choosing FIX YA!

Look at the gas tank filler cap. Make sure the seal in the cap is good. If it is cracked it may be leaking air into the system. Simply replacing the cap usually fixes this problem

Check engine light can mean hundreds of things. If you have an autozone near by, they will check diagnostics for free. For a more in depth diagnosis, you may want to take it to a licensed shop. They will charge a fee though.

2003 Mazda tribute - Check lite come on and engine stalls several times. Car will start after several starts but engine lite remains on. Do youknow the problem?

Of coarse not,no idea on the problem

You have a check light on

Is that something you don't know about?
They have been on all vehicles for 30 years !

Check for codes
Diagnose the system with the malfunction
Repair

Same 3 things you do with any dash light,
on any vehicle since 1980. Can't guess,have
to start somewhere & test things

I have a 2003 Mazda protege 5. check engine light no codes

Remove the wire from the negative terminal on the battery and wait a few minutes, then reconnect the wire. This will "reset" the computer and remove the check engine light. If the light comes back on, take it to a Mazda service center and let them read the code. They will be able to tell you what is wrong. Pepboys, Autozone....arent always the smartest cookies and are wrong more than they are right.

Check the air inlet boot going from the air filter to the intake for rips or holes. If rips exist, this would allow air to bypass the filter and mass air flow sensor and will lead to a check engine light appearing. The code would read "too lean, bank 1." If this problem is allowed to continue for long periods of time, the EGR ports will have to be cleaned out and maybe even the intake.
