98 a4 brake indicator light

This morning driving down the road all of a sudden my brake indicator light came on and so did the battery light on the dash. The voltage is fine no change, brakes work fine and so do the brake lights, any ideas. I dont understand what is wrong. my husband said the fluid is a little low, we thought maybe it just needs new pads because of the sensor on the brakes this would make sense to me. any thoughts? i have had it for 8 months now and it is the limo edition with the 30 valve 2.8 no turbo... please help

I checked the fluid level and it is fine. The ignition is fine as well. I drive a half hour to work and it was on my way off the interstate that the light came on, was absolutely fine until then. my husband thinks its the brake pads themselves.

There are sensors on those pads so when they wear down low enough the brake light will come on so as long as your pedal is good and you can still stop its probably just pads. When they are replaced brake fluid will rise and also be good.

Raise the hood.....find the brake fluid resevoir ( usually up by the windshield/firewall area...drivers side) It will look like a clear or opaque colored plastic oblong container...not much larger than a soap dish, only deeper. Find the "full mark" on the side of vessel, and make sure brake fluid level is at the mark. You can find DOT3 brake fluid in convenience stores, gas stations and even grocery stores. Dont overfill...

1996 audi a4 wont start

What happens when you try to start it? Does the engine turn over or is it completely dead? If you don't hear the engine turn over I would check to see if your battery is charged. If it isn't it's likely alternator went out. Report back if it's turning over (meaning the battery and alternator is good)

Not to scare or offend you but it could be many many things. It does help that the check engine light is on, though.
If you can go to a place like Autozone, where they check your check engine light for free, and post what the code was, I can give you a place to start.
I do not mind helping you further with a proper diagnosis procedure either, if you can share your vehicle information.

Sounds like a MAF(Mass air flow sensor, you can start by pulling it out, it's inside the intake box on this car. You can clean it with a high percentage isopropl alcohal or MAF cleaner, this sounds to be the problem, if it is really bad, you can unplug it temporarily, it will not have as much power but it will run better. If cleaning it doesn't fix it, then you will need to replace it, ensure not to touch the sensor itself at all.

With the sudden loss in brake pressure, and the light on, I would check the fluid level and if its low, suspect a brake fluid leak, that may be the burning smell, maybe leaking near a exhaust pipe? You dont mention where you are, but if its NORTH and salt is used to get snow off the roads, brake line failures are real common.

98 Jetta...stopped while driving

During this past winter, I was driving my 98 Jetta GL and it suddenly shut down in the middle of the road. It restarted but would only go a little ways before doing the same thing. I got it checked out and it turns out I had to get new fuses. I knew someone who could put them in it was very cheap to fix.
