I have the same trouble..although it has now progressed to the trans is slipping as well as the overdrive is gone..could this be a trend?? Starts with the od going out then progresses to the rest of the trans? Dunno..going to have a professional look at this and see how much $$ it will take.

My tranmission wont shift into over drive and now starting to slip a little at first if i give it the gas hard

there could be many reasons or combination of reasons for this, but proper level and clean fluid would be the first thing to do-you do not mention how many miles or how long or often the trans has been serviced, but that is a major factor in longevity for any trans (especially in a heavy Ford). The slipping is a major consideration--you should make every effort NOT to drive it is such a way so that it slips as this will overheat and greatly accelerate the demise of your trans. You should consider doing a trans service, replacing the fluid and filter-you should be able to even drain the torque converter by removing the flexplate inspection cover, rotating the crank bolt to expose the 10mm drain bolt in the torque converter-this may make a big difference in trans performance, but if you have high miles and the trans has never been serviced, this could cause more harm than good, as it could dislodge all kinds of gunk from years of driving, plugging very small orfices in the throttle body.. You could just nurse it until you find a good, used trans inexpensively, they are plentiful since virtually any v-8 Ford of that era can be used, usually with minor or no modifications. If you decide to do a trans service and it works, consider installing a trans cooler (at least 24,000GVW) as keeping a trans cool dramatically extends the life of any transmission.

one thing ive warned my friends to never do and that is to never have your trans flushed cause you may have new fluids but what about the trans filter its old and iots there for that reason to keep dirt and metal; shavings from the bands so try having your oil and filter in the transmission replaced , pull your trans dip stick and on a white piece of paper put a drop of trans oil that you have in your trans at that very moment it should be redish pink but if its brown and smells really bad then the problem is in the oil and filter . change it before u have to replace the whole trans

You have a transmission control unit problem unfortunately and I'll warn you - it's not cheap. Your description describes it to a "T". It will reset itself to "LIMP" mode (short distance drivability) and will only reset so many times. You need to take to Ford and have trans control unit replaced. (PS bring your wallet - sorry)

Yes I have a 97 town & country and it has a couple problems.. one is a sqeeky belt and the tranny feels like its slipping once in awhile but and then when checked they say its. fine..

Belts these days aren't as forgiving as the old V belts, when they go bad they glaze, slip, make noise etc. They may LQQk good but squeaking is first warning of belt going bad. I'd replace it for peace of mind. Re: Trans - have you ever had trans fluid and filter changed? It's one of the most overlooked maintenance items of all time. It should be changed every 50k, 30k if you tow a trailer. The $50 you spend on a trans filter service will save you a $2000 transmission job.

Transmisson on a 3.8L automatic V6 Thunderbird problem.

Never add anything to an automatic trans but the correct fluid.
New fluid will make it slip worse
Lucas-is a waste of money and may ruin your trans.
You may get away with removing the valve body and cleaning it.
I would suggest a trans repair shop, but don't let them sell you on rebuilding yours until they try the valve body, unless the fluid is burn't,then your done, as you already should know

Is there any other way to find out which transmission is in my 94 town car with out taking the transmission out or jacking the car up. My transmission is about gone and upon calling the auto parts store,...

There is only 1 transmission for a 1994 Licln Town Car. Its a AODE, Automatic Overdrive Electronic trans. Earlier trans were AOD, non electric. Before that it was a C-6. After the AODE, your transmission, was a 4R70 trans. The trans will need to be rebuilt or replaced with a salvage yard unit if its slipping, or making noises. If you have it rebuilt, make sure you get at least a 3yr/50k warranty. Most salvage yard trans will make it 12m/12k, so if the rebuilder is confident about his or there rebuild, he should give you that. The original one lasted how long? 1-800-950-4644 ext 203, Jeremy can help you. Rockauto.com for just parts. Hope this helps you.

Only way rpms will flair is if trans has low pressure at any time (and allowing internal clutches to slip) or, if the lock up converter is not remaining engaged). This is not an engine problem. Someone needs to drive this with a scanner attached and monitor systems.Other than an internal problem, could be a shift control module, speed sensor or even a problem with something as seemingly unrelated as a brake light switch.
To protect your rights under any guarantee, keep good records on what is done to correct your problem. In working on your car, your problem becomes the shops problem 'till it's corrected!!!
good luck
