What would cause the fault code, ABS fault. my brakes are still working good, but this is flashing on the display panel. Will this afect the operation of the truck.

  • Anonymous Feb 04, 2009

My ABS light came on in my 2005 GMC Canyon (automatic/2WD) as I shifted to a lower gear going down a vineyard dirt slope resulting in a -0-speedometer reading, "traction-fault" reading/flashing, a low buzz noise in my steering column, inoperative cruise control and transmission working hard ... all about the same time! Could all this be related? Soon after, I also discovered that a 30" vine/twig got caught in my front wheel/passenger side. Still "driveable" and the brakes continue working fine. Any idea what went wrong?

It is most likely the abs sensor is dirty or bad,It won't affect the operation but it will prevent the abs feature from working. You can have it checked at any brake shop. Some will even do it for free.

On my 91 cougar it sat for about 2 months due to a power steering problem I fixed that problem now my abs and brake lights stay on is it possible if I bleed all four brakes they might shut off?

"Is it possible if I bleed all four brakes they might shut off?"

If you bleed the brakes all you will do is remove any air in the brake lines and replace the brake fluid with new fluid. Do this in any event if the brake fluid is 2 yrs old or more.

This will have no affect on the ABS warning light and when the light is displayed the ABS has turned off because there is a problem with the ABS. You will not get it back on until the cause is determined and fixed which may be just a failed wheel speed sensor.

The brake warning has probably been triggered by the same failure that has caused the ABS warning light (since they came on together and bleeding the brakes should make no difference).

If the car sat for 2 months, no doubt the battery went flat. You have not mentioned anything about the battery but if your battery is in poor shape this can trigger warning lights in many cars especially the ABS (and stability control systems).

The best option is to have the vehicle scanned for fault codes that have been generated and there will be one or 2 if these warning lights are displayed. Scanning the ABS for codes will show up one or more issues and you can trace the problem from there. I think you will find the brake warning and ABS warning have been caused by the same fault.

In any event make sure you check the brake fluid level in the car and look for any external leaks of fluid that may have developed. Check the operation of your brakes to ensure they are working normally and that the brake pedal is not slowly dropping to the floor when you continue to apply pressure. Bleed the brakes if the brake fluid is 2 yrs old or more.

Abs light stays on and is flashing a i think acode

hi Robert

you can check the ABS fault code as following:

switch ignition on and wait for the abs light to start to flash.
it will flash in long and short flashes, long flash stands for ten, short flash stands for one, there is a short pause in between, and long pause after each code, take a note of the code and Google it
good luck

Esp light flashing

There could be one or more of several reasons why the ESP light has illuminated on your Smart car...
For example, you could have a fault with dirty reluctor rings on the Abs system - faulty Abs sensor/ s ... a fault with the brake light switch - a fault with the steering angle sensor -- even a software glitch / issue in the control system...
The above are known issues that can and do cause the Esp light to come on.
What you will have to do is have the car connected to a dealer diagnostic machine - This will run a full diagnostic test and fault code read - to see why the Esp light has come on and quickly and efficiently find the right cause - and then it can be sorted out, whatever it transpires to be.
You really cannot do much on a Diy basis on these for this fault. You can check the reluctor rings as mentioned above and the wiring to the ABS sensors. The abs light will often come on to with the Esp light - but not always. Dont check these these things with the Ign On....
Too, you can check to see if the brake lights are working - if they are not - thats a definite indication of brake lamp switch failure which will cause the Esp light to come on - but while its worth checking - even if the lights do work - it doesn't always follow the switch is ok - it has a dual function - brake lights and engine management circuitry...
At which point, if you have found nothing - you will have to have the diagnostic done as above to find the fault.

ABS Fault indicator ? Is this an issue or just another money scheme ? Brakes seem to be working fine, truck has 155K on her.

The way the Brakes work on your Colorado, if there is an issue with your ABS, the brakes will still work. You may just not the have ABS brakes active. Most common cause of the ABS indicator is a faulty sensor to one of the 4 wheel. the common ones are the front wheels. Inspect the ABS sensor lead wire which should be along the A-arms to the ABS sensor on the inside wheel hub. Spray brake parts cleaner to the sensor and speed ring to ensure there clean and free of dirt that may be hindering the sensor to read the speed ring on the hub. Look at the condition of the lead wire and inspect for corrosion or any other type of damage. Most of the time a good spray of Brake parts cleaner will fix the problem. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, buy the brake parts cleaner there and have them scan the truck for the DTC codes which would indicate that it is the ABS sensor and not the ABS module, which will be costly and your most likely run it the way it is without ABS due to cost of replacing the module. Good luck friend.

VW passat 2001 lat model.... Error codes 1411 , 1423 and 1649

when the abs light or any other light flashes it means that theres a problem in that particuler system normaly on the abs system you will not feel no differance because the anti lock brake system works only if the hit the brake hard it would not allow the brake system to lock up any of the wheels thata why the name says it all ANTI LOCK BRAKE but you should get it check by a mechanic with a scanner he will tell you were is the fault good luck
