As well as the cruise control disengaging when light switch is turned on, the brake lights do not work except on the top of the van, The regular brake lights go off when the brakes are applied.

this is a 1998 Chevy full size converted van

SOURCE: CHEVY 1500 TRUCK HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF WHEN YOU TURN ON SWITCH

If you have replaced the switch, and it is still doing it it sounds like you definately have a short somewhere in your wiring. On the other hand if the dimmer is in the turn signal arm ( forward bright back dim ) the problem could also be there in the dimmer switch, such as a short being caused by that dimmer switch being faulty.Auto Zone and Discount Auto Parts both test a lot of your electrical problems for free, and/or may have some knowledge to more accurately pin point the problem. Not sure about Pep Boys or some of the other discount auto part chains.

SOURCE: cruise control won't turn off

YOU DEFINATELY HAVE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.CHECK ALL OF THE FUSES FIRST.IF THE HEATER FUSE IS BLOWN,REPLACE THE FUSE WITH THE SAME AMP FUSE THEN START THE CAR,ACTIVATE THE HEATER.IF IT'S NOT WORKING OR YOUR CRUISE LIGHT IS STILL ON,HAVE SOMEONE CHECK IT OUT.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Most cruise controls are vacuum actuated. check for vacuum leaks. This also occurs at the brake petal where cruise is disengaged, check for proper adjustment on the cruise switch.

2005 chevy trailblazer - no cruise control and brake lights only work when key is turned off

I would check the turn signal switch. The cruise and turn signal are on the same switch. The brake lights go through the switch before going to the brake lights. And the turn signals don't work with the ignition off.

Irecently had my transmission fixed by AAMCO. Ever since the repair my cruise control works intermittantly. 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Some cruise controls are vacuum controlled check the vacuum lines make sure they are hooked up and are not leaking air or sucking in outside air. Another cause could be the cruise control switch around the brake pedal. There should be two there is one for the brake lights and the other is for disengaging the cruise control try bending the bracket downward a bit and maybe spraying some WD40 on switch in case it might be sticking due to wear so the switch operates freely. Happy motoring!!!

Cruise does'nt work all the time have to pull back

the brake switch is what is used to disengage the cruise, so I would check to see if the brake pedal is slightly contacting the switch to keep the cruise disengaged..it is located just on the back side of the brake pedal arm up under the dash...it may be out of adjustment or maybe just plain defective

I own a 2005 GMC Canyon Five CYL and the cruise control stopped working last niight. You push the button and no cruise. I checked the fuse and it is ok I exchanged with another 10AMP and no change still...

Start with the simple and check the fuses and the Stop lamp switch. Check your brake lights, if they're not working, the cruise won't work either. If they're not working, check the fuse for them, if the fuse is fine, then take it into the dealer, there's been a recall issued on the brake switch, so it should get fixed for free.
Cruise Control Disengaged
The powertrain control module (PCM) disengages the cruise control operation based on the signals from the following switches:

* The stop lamp switch
* The TCC brake/cruise release switch
* The clutch release switch, if equipped
* The cruise control On/Off switch

The TCC brake/cruise release switch and the stop lamp switch are mounted on the brake pedal bracket. When the brake pedal is applied, the normally closed TCC brake/cruise release switch opens and the normally open stop lamp switch closes. The PCM detects a low signal voltage on the TCC brake/cruise release switch signal circuit and a high signal voltage on the stop lamp switch signal circuit. When the clutch pedal is applied, the normally closed clutch release switch opens and the PCM detects zero voltage on the CCP switch signal circuit. The vehicle speed stored in the memory of the PCM will be erased when the cruise control On/Off button is turned OFF, or the ignition switch is turned OFF.

The Cruise Control System will disengage when the PCM detects that a driver override function has been active for approximately 60 seconds .

When the Cruise Control System is disengaged, the PCM sends a class 2 message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) in order to deactivate the cruise control indicator.

Cruise Control Inhibited
The powertrain control module (PCM) inhibits the cruise control operation when any of the following conditions exist:

* A cruise control related DTC has been set.
* The vehicle speed is less than 40.2 km/h (25 mph) .
* The vehicle is in PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, or 1st gear.
* The engine RPM is too low.
* The engine RPM is too high, with fuel cut off.
* The vehicle speed is too high, with fuel cut off.
* The system voltage is not between 9 volts and 16 volts .
* The Traction Control System (TCS) is active for more than 2 seconds .

Thank you for using Fixya and start with replacing the stop lamp switch. Even though the brake light work, it;s been known for that switch to cause your issue. that's way there was a recall for it.

4-ways,signal and brake lights dont work

Canadian, The switch will run you $150 ( non cruise control ) to $250 ( with cruise control). Then what ever labor rates are in you area could run $80 to $180 to replace.
Hope this helps.
By the way, why do you believe the switch is bad?
Let me know.
