Question about GMC Sierra 1500

3 Answers

I have a 2000 GMC 1500 pickup. Can I change the fuel sending unit by itself or should I change the entire fuel module? If I change just the sending unit, will this short out the fuel pump?

It seems that no matter the fuel quantity, the gauge still fluctuates.

I think you'll find sender & pump are all one assy. What is the reason for changing. If it's the gauge, have you removed, cleaned contacts & re-attached wire plug at pump/sender assy, to see if it would cure your problem? Personally, it's not something I'd want to do twice in a short time, so if I was replacing one (if parts are available to do so) I'd replace the other, unless difference in price was extreme.

You can change out the sending unit. From my exp., you're better off to change the whole complete module. A lot less headaches.

If you are going to do it, replace the entire fuel pump/sending unit and the wire harness at the pump to get the job done right. Any thing less is a waist of you're time and you will have the tank out again in a week with another problem also spend the extra $20.00 for a new fuel filter. Gm has had lots of problems with the pumps and the wire harness and most people never change the fuel filter .

Wheres the fuel tank sending unit on a 2000 silverado

You access it by lowering the fuel tank and removing the fuel pump module. The sending unit is mounted to the pickup tube.

Sounds like you replaced alot of parts for nothing.
The pickup coil in the distributor "fires" the module which grounds the coil and the injectors.
Those components would need to be tested. The coil fires the plugs when the ground is removed by the module or the key switch.

Do you need a module when replacing a fuel pump in a 2002 chevy pick up

I am sure that if you looked around you could locate a pump and simply change that part. You are going to have to remove the module assembly from the tank anyway. If it was my vehicle and I removed the pump assembly from the tank, I would suggest replacing the entire module. That way you have a new pump and also a new sending unit for your fuel guage. If you try and replace the pump only, there is a chance of damaging some of the other components such as the sending unit. You also have to do some wire and hose splicing to connect the new pump

Best of Luck!,

2000 gmc 1500 truck ran out of gas filed up won't run. Starts than dies . Tried it for an hour still no luck. Don't think it's the fuel pump but not sher

sounds like the fuel line still has air in it. this should correct itself if you can get the engine to run long enough. fuel pressure builds on the pump side of the fuel rail and when there is an exess ammount of pressure (lack of fuel consumption) the fuel regulator should send the extra gas back to yhe tank to run thru again. try holding down on the accelerator when starting this should send extra fuel to the injectors and may help "prime" the line. you cant flood the engine so dont worry about that just dont over rev the cold engine. this should clear up on its own. the only other thing it could be is an obstruction in the fuel filter or the inlet sock on the in tank pump. if thre was a lot of sediment in the tank it got sucked up withe the last bit of gas in the tank, you may have to change out the filter.

Need help getting the fuel pump out of the modual on a 2000 saturn sl2

The fuel pump on this vehicle is not serviced without the module. If the fuel pump needs to be replaced the entire fuel pump module will have to be replaced. The only part of the module that is available seperately is the fuel sending unit for the fuel gauge.

Fuel gauge doesn't register correctly

The fuel gauge sending unit is in the fuel tank in a module along with the fuel pump, and float guage. It sends an electronic signal to the fuel guage on your dash. When it becomes worn or the float may even have a leak in it, the unit sends incorrect info to your guage. The solution is to empty your fuel tank, drop it from the vehicle, remove and replace the entire module.
