The heater core is not usually the place to get trapped air out of the coolant system. But if you suspect an air block in the heater core. pull off the heater outlet hose loose at the engine, while the car is running. Before you start the car, loosen the hose clamp and have the hose ready to pull off. Start the car with the heater on high heat setting, then pull the hose off and watch for a slow steady stream of coolant from the hose. When you have a steady stream flow, you have no more air in the heater core. To purge any remaining air in the system, leave the radiator cap off with engine running until the car has reached normal operating temperature. Then shut off the car, top up the coolant in radiator and overflow tank, and put the radiator cap back on.

SOURCE: How do replace heater core in 2002 Pontiac Gran Prix

i do believe you have to take the passengers side dash apart behind the glove compartment. go to autozone and get a manual or go to the library and check the chiltons manual. this is not an easy job. how bad is the leak? if its not bad these heater cores are made of all aluminum. i would buy a bottle of that radiator additive and see if that takes care of the problem first. it only cost about 5 bucks a bottle and it may permanantly fix your problem.

Heater problems

Have you tried checking the coolant lines going into your heater core to see if there restricted, it could also be a bad water pump, or a worn or loose drive belt. It sounds like you have poor coolant flow goiing through your system. You might want to also check your coolant reservoir cap to see if it is maintaining the proper pressure. Good luck.
