Check for spark at each plug.(If you have good spark, coil is good)
Check for fuel (if it is getting fuel, check or have the timing checked)

A coil is a possible cause but there are many other reasons why it wont start. make sure you have at least 35-45 psi fuel pressure. make sure some animal didnt make a home out of your air intake and block your air supply. also i would invest in a spark tester. you can buy one for under 10 dollars and you can make sure you have a good coil that way rather than crossing you fingers and throwing a new one at it. if you have good fuel pressure, spark, and a clear air inlet. it could be something electrical with the fuel injectors, or it could be something engine internal such as a timing belt broke or you have no compression in a few cyilinders. but that is very uncommon

What charges a 98 ford escort alternator?

That could be a bad battery. Try replacing the battery (cheaper than a new alternator). Usually, if it is the alternator, your battery will be drained and you aren't able to start the car without boosting. The dimming lights is the clue - lights run purely off the battery, not the alternator, as do most of the electric components.

Not a sensor or fuse. Possibly the battery: only way to know is have it checked. Best way is check when car wont start. Should have over 12 volts. I would suspect alternator is not charging battery. Put a voltmeter on battery when car is running. Voltmeter should read 13.5-14 volts. If not, something's not right. Check your battery grounds for tightness and cleaness. Sometimes a loose connection will keep battery from either charging or starting. If you still have the problem, check your starter for a short, drawing too much amperage.

id go with the mechanic. You definately have a bad ground, it may just be your terminals though. Check your terminals, follow the ground off of the battery and look for any damage, etc. As far ur locks locking and unlocking, it sounds like the keyless entry was resetting. If the alt was bought at Autozone, that may be the problem, they sold me a fuel pump for my gran prix. Needless to say 5 pumps later, it ran.

Battery is dead bought a new one still wont stay charged, is it the alternator ? my husband thinks there may an electrical issue

If the car does not run with a batterie in it than it is the alternator. test by uhooking the batterie while car is running, Remove the negative cable ( BLACK ). if it stops running than you have a bad alternator, Which means you husband and you are both correct.

You may have received a faulty alternator from the store. I have bought alternators from AutoZone before and in one instance had to take it back 3 times before I got one that worked correctly. Also, you should not have jumped the car, you should have started it up on battery and alternator. That would have told you if the battery was drained or the alternator you had just put in was bad. If you put the drained battery back in the car to run it, the car would have died anyway. Whenever I have changed an alternator out I always let it run in the driveway for awhile to make sure that both the battery and alternator are functioning correctly.

this may be because the battery is dead or the alternator is not working correctly. you might check both.
