Check Engine Light on

My daughter has a 2001 turbo Jetta. Her ck engine light came on, we changed the main sensor, the ck engine light still comes on. The code is always the same, 172 running rich. Can you suggest what the problem would be after changing the main sensor? We also have changed filters.

That was the sensor we changed, the mass air flow. We also replaced some pressure hose that was bad. It went for about a week and the check engine light came back on. We have not checked the oxygen sensor.

by removing that cable it will only reset the ck engine light and will mess up the engine computer. We have a scanner that removes the ck light and produces a code that says P172.

I also have a 2001 Jetta 1.8T that had a constant check engine light. What finally fixed my problem was a throttle body cleaning. There was a build up of carbon and gunk preventing the throttle plate from closing completley at idle and causing a fuel trim missreading

Most likely Mass Air Flow Sensor. Could be oxygen sensors also but the mass air flow is more common

Vw Jetta engine light

false When the engine light came on it is telling you that there is a serious problem occurring in the engine management system or CPU. The correct procedure is to run the fault codes to find out the faulty sensor/servo. Check coolant level at the radiator cap. Fix any faults and then have a code reader used to reset the engine light

pumping the throttle pedal will not make it start any easier ,i would suggest trying to change the autochoke temperature sensor so it enriches the fuel when its cold .but even this wouldnt throw the engine light on so again i would ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and read the codes as to why the engine light is on

2001 vw jetta gs :check engine light goes on and off

sounds like a faulty sensor tripping and reconnecting.. the next time the light comes on, take it to an advance auto store or an auto zone, they can read your codes for free... this will tell you what is being tripped, that way you know exactly what you need to get checked and/or fixed instead of a mechanic poking around trying to find everything thats NOT wrong. but if you are not expeiriencing any difficulty with the car, you should be fine. the check engine light actually means alot less than most people think. its usually a transmission or emissions sensor, or even as simple as leaving your gas cap off after filling and then driving for awhile.

Check engine light on, car shakes while in reverse, stalls ...

You need a code scanner hooked up to find out what is causing the light ot come on. Some auto part stores can do that. Once the code is retrieved, they can tell you what sensor is causing it.
