Question about 1983 Volvo DL

1 Answer

1983 Volvo DL has a couple problems

So I just bought this 1983 volvo DL a couple of weeks ago. It ran a little rough but I thought I could fix it. I was driving and all of a sudden I lost tons of power. I changed the oil, oil filtrer, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and fuel injectors and still same problem. Another problem I have is the fuel tank cap has a keyed lock to it. I can't get it open. any suggestions?

As for the fuel tank cap and assuming you have lost the key, try some keys that are similar in size. If you have the key and it won't open, you might try some graphite lube in the lock, let it sit a few minutes, then try it. If you lost the key, you might try a filing cabinet key, sometimes those work. A locksmith might be able to pick it for you.

As for losing power, check the wiring to the battery and the fuse from the driver's side fender to the injectors. If the seller washed off the engine, he may have gotten water in that fuse link. Pull the fuse, look for moisture, put some electrical contact lube on the fuse tabs and replace it. The battery cables should be tight and the ground should be tight at the grounding point on the engine block. If that all checks, it could be throttle body needing a cleaning, or a mass air meter needing a change.

If the simple stuff checks out, get a computer diagnosis. Don't waste time on shops that don't know Volvos and make them show you the codes that they get from the computer probe. Been there, done that.

1. Check the cabin sensor.
2. Check the actuator beneath the engine compartment at the front.
3. check the connection to the blower. Always give way after a few years.

If you go online to www.car-part.com, you can find anything you could ever want for any vehicle. It is pretty easy to locate, and is tied in with many salvage lots. It gives the cond, the price, location, how many miles away, and phone number. I love it. Good luck
