1998 Chrysler Concorde Starting Problem

Mystified by this problem. Last two years, car has trouble starting. Here's the pattern: always starts right up in morning. With each destination you drive to, gets harder and harder to start - eventually refusing to start (turns over, though). The battery seems to get weaker and weaker over time, finally failing. Pep Boys replaced the battery twice, saying it must be defective. They said they detected a power drain in diagnostics but could not locate it. But after a third battery was put in the problem continued. I could not understand why it would always start right up in the morning unless the battery was drained, but would get harder and harder to start unless you let it sit a long time. Started to wonder if it was flooding itself, so I cranked it without touching the gas. Started much easier. Problem is not as bad doing this, but it still refuses to start sometimes and you have to wait at least 20 minutes to start it again. It is flooding the engine and draining the battery slightly? Would could cause that?

    i have the same problem. its draining the battery and smells like gas after you crank it for a period of time. its also been running kinda rough in city. fine on the highway. if you have any suggestions please let me know.

    Thanks - I'll try that. Guess I'm showing my age (and cheapness) I've only had old cars and motorcycles - stuff you have to crank, stomp and pray to get to turnover. I've been a lead foot on the gas but I suspect it is a sensor problem too. Thanks

First of all, you should never touch the gas when starting it, on a fuel injected engine. Whether engine is cold, or warmed up, you shouldn't touch gas pedal. That was o.k. years back when carburetors were used, but not with fuel injection. Yes you will cause flooding especially when warmed up. Now there is a good chance you have a sensor or something acting up, but I'm guessing they checked for that when checking battery problem. You may be able to check for codes by cycling key, have yoou tried that, or had codes read yet?

    Try timing the no start so that your at home , with a spark plug wrench ready if you can. Before you pull the plugs, pull one wire at a time on a couple of different plugs and confirm that you have good spark there. Then start pulling your plugs & see how many, if any, look wet with fuel. When were the plugs & wires changed last ?

Changed water pump now 1998 chrysler concord 3.2 won't start


if the water pump was a internal water pump it runs off timing belt. timing may be out. This happens alot and it dosent have to be out much to keep it from starting. This could be the problem if it is a internal pump and happens alot. I have fix alot of cars with this problem.

Ive been having trouble with my '98 chrysler concorde.it would either ''stall'' out while stopped or die out while driving.i took the car to the mechanic & they put in a cam sensor & tonight coming...


When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? when clogged, they will cause the engine to stall when stopped, or while driving. Inexpensive, if you can do it yourself, Part cost-under $15, for most cars. Won't do any harm to change it, know what I mean?

Nedd to see the manaul transmission gear shift


"The shift pattern is a little different, with reverse starting to the left of first, in the German (Getrag in this case) pattern rather than the "reverse-in-sixth" Japanese pattern. 1998 Chrysler Concorde 3.2L Intermittent starting problem. Can hear the starter solenoid kick but will not turn over. The starter, battery and cables have been replaced. After replacing the battery today...


Thoroughly check the battery to chassis to engine ground system is properly connected and in good order.
Check/replace any solenoid control relay if fitted -(slave relay interfacing between ignition start sw and starter motor engage solenoid).
Check condition and connections of any fusible link (or in line Maxifuse).
