Question about 1988 Acura Legend

Acura Legend 1988

My car did not pass the test only. They said that it was because it was not burning enough fuel but, instead it was creating another type of polutant. I need to find out what needs to be repaired of fixed in order to solve my problem. Thank You

    1990 Legend
    On mine it did not pass NO and CO levels. The printout says that it is too rich fuel/air mixture.

You can get some idea of what you need done by the smog stations readout.I suppose you looked at the computer codes under the passenger seat, the O2 sensors could be faulty. If you have done a total tune-up after the car was running rough, you may have to replace the Catalytic Converter. It's job is to be so hot it can finish any unburnt fuel, but it can be "spent" if the car was abused. The final engine thing is the exhaust valve adjustment, but you can hear clicking if the clearances are too great.

SMOG test passed ALL except "NOx" results were 696 Limit is 585. Any easy fixes ??


I've had good luck using CRC's "Guaranteed to pass" fuel system cleaner. Follow the directions exactly. It should bring all the smog numbers down--perhaps get your NOx number low enough.

If the EGR valve is not working properly, it will lead to high NOx. Check for a leaky vacuum diaphragm on this valve. It will not only keep the EGR from working when it should, but also lead to a lean mixture that burns hotter, thus generating even more NOx.

Check for vacuum leaks. Any extra air that makes the mixture lean will contribute to high combustion temperatures and high NOx--even if the EGR valve is working.

Finally, if those steps don't work, it could be your catalytic converter is getting old and inefficient. Don't be surprised if you need a new 'cat.

What you do is pull the engine error codes. On the other hand, oxygen sensors can be replaced, based on time. A good running engine keeps the sensor hot enough to last a really, really long time.

Poor acceleration


check the timing with a timing gun.if the timing is too retarded there will be a huge power loss.The catalytic converter could be plugged,if there is a reduced exhaust flow that is a good possibility.A quick but noisy way to tell is to undo the exhaust before the converter and see if power returns.here is a list of other things to check...spark plugs,cap rotor and wires. Do a compression test.Then the air filter,clean the throttle body. Check the fuel pressure and change the fuel filter.

Where is number 1 cylinder on a 1988 acur legend


All you need to do is to set the timing. Loosen the dist bolts just enough so that you can turn it but so that it's not real loose. Turn the car on and start turning it, it will only move a few degrees but it's just enough for it to miss fire.

heres the location and test for the fuel pump relay these have a circuit board inside that cracks that is why you dont have fuel pressure in most cases. click here
