This service procedure is for setting base ignition timing. Refer to underhood emission sticker for any additional service procedure steps and/or specifications.
These engines require a tachometer hook-up to the check connector-see illustrations. NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to become grounded; severe and expensive damage can occur to the coil and/or igniter.
Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, confirm the compatibility of your unit before using.

  1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all electrical accessories. Do not attempt to check timing specification or idle speed on a cold engine.

Fig. Fig. 6: Attach the tachometer to the battery and check connector terminals

  1. Connect a tachometer (connect the tachometer (+) terminal to the terminal IG- of the check connector) and check the engine idle speed to be sure it is within the specification given in the Tune-Up Specifications chart or underhood emission sticker.
  2. Remove the cap on the diagnostic check connector. Using a small jumper wire or Special Service Tool SST 09843-18020, short terminals TE1 (test terminal No. 1) and E1 (earth-ground) together.
  3. If the timing marks are difficult to see, shut the engine OFF and use a dab of paint or chalk to make them more visible.
  4. Connect a timing light accordignition timing for 1989 toyota corrolla - 0900c1528006ee0d.jpgrer's instructions.

  1. Start the enignition timing for 1989 toyota corrolla - 0900c1528006ee11.jpging light to observe the timing marks. With the jumper wire in the check connector the timing should be to specifications (refer to underhood emission sticker as necessary) with the engine fully warmed up (at correct idle speed) and the transmission in correct position. If the timing is not correct, loosen the bolts at the distributor just enough so that the distrignition timing for 1989 toyota corrolla - enlarge_icon.gifrned. Turn the distributor to adignition timing for 1989 toyota corrolla - enlarge_tooltip.gif timing as required. Once the proper marks are seen to align with the timing light, timing is correct.

Fig. Fig. 11: If necessary, loosen the 2 mounting bolts and turn the distributor to adjust the timing

  1. Without changing the position of the distributor, tighten the distributor bolts and double check the timing with the light (check idle speed as necessary).
  2. Disconnect the jumper wire or Special Service Tool (SST) at the diagnostic check connector.

This jumper will be used repeatedly during diagnostics in later sections. Take the time to make a proper jumper with correct terminals or probes. It's a valuable special tool for very low cost.
  1. Refer to the underhood emission sticker for timing specification and any additional service procedure steps. If necessary, repeat the timing adjustment procedure.
  2. Shut the engine OFF and disconnect all test equipment. Roadtest the vehicle for proper operation.

SOURCE: how to change tail light brake switch on 1994 toyota corrolla

Normally this is caused by a problem with the brake light switch. If you don't take care of this soon you will have a dead battery, so try this. Look under the dash at the brake pedal. There will be a switch mounted on the backside of the pedal/arm that has a push button switch inside. Have someone stand behind the car and check to see if the brake lights go off when you pull the brake pedal away from the switch toward the driver's seat. If they do, then you need to turn the outer housing of the switch a little bit to make it pull away from the brake pedal when the pedal is in its resting position.

Sorry, I can't remember which way to tell you to turn it but a few turns should be all that it takes. If that doesn't work then you may need to replace the switch but they rarely fail.

The mechanic should check on the Idle and adjust the Idle .the car is vibrating because of the Idle is low and the engine can't do to move very easy .there is low fuel coming from the fuel pump going to the engine. The transmission of the car don't have a problem because of you just change the oil . But the Idle has to be adjusted until the car will not vibrate.

SOURCE: how to adjust rear brakes shoes on toyota corrolla

the shoes on drum brakes should auto adjust by backing up and applying pressure to the brake pedal (you may hear a clicking noise from the springs on the adjustment stars as they turn). If this does not work, the mechanism may be broken, aligned improperly or stuck by corrosion. Most drum brake assemblies have an access hole in the drum or backing plate to make manual adjustments, comment back to me if u have these access holes and I will walk you through the procedure...(check your shoe lining thickness as you may just need new brake shoes)

I HAVE A 1989 TOYOTA CORROLLA. iCAN START BUT IT DOES NOT IDLE. I HAVE TO KEEP FOOT ON ACCELERATOR PAD TO KEEP THE MOTOR RUNNING AND IT STOLLS WNEN APPROACING TO STOP. FROM FRANKLIN SOUTH AFRICA.

If your carb has one, check the idle cut-off solenoid wiring and operation first. If that checks out your idle jet is either blocked or the volume adjustment screw is out of adjustment. Start with the volume adjustment screw by turning it all the way in (counting the number of turns it took) and then turning it out about three turns. See if you can get the engine to idle at that setting or somewhere near that. If that does not work, replace the screw to the original position and remove the idle jet and ensure that it is not clogged.

I am facing a problem with my toyota corolla 1989, it backfires, frequent engine shutdown mostly when the engine is hot but not overheating, i already replace my ignition coil, adjust timing and cleaned my...

Sounds like an intake manifold leak. Once the manifold gets hot the gasket leaks. I would check that first and the head gasket second. Are you getting any smoke, hesitation at all?
