Question about 1995 Dodge Avenger

1 Answer

My avenger cuts off after being driven for at least 5-30 minutes

My avenger starts up fine, i drive it for about 5-30 mins, then it just dies and all the gages come on. I try to restart it and it wont start. I have to let it sit anywhere from 10-25 mins before it restarts again. Then it will do it all over again. I let it run idle for about 35 mins and then it shut off and wouldnt restart til 20 mins later. I smell the fuel in the exhaust and have quite a bit of moisture or condensation coming from the tail pipes. I took it to a mech whom told me its a poss. prob with the exhaust but wasnt sure. It has a new crank sensor, new distributor, new air filter, new fuel pump and new fuel filter. What gives? Please help.

    Hey Philriden,

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the help. Got a question, i already replaced the crank sensor, is that the same thing as the crankshaft position sensor and or camshaft position sensor? If so, sounds like it has gone bad after about 6 months. If not, are these 2 different sensors or 1?

    Thanks again.

My 2.5 '95 Dodge avenger does the same thing..but restarts immediately after..all sensors have been changed, no codes appear. and somtimes it runs perfectly for a whole day or two..Mostly dies on initial morning and evening start , while idling at a red light..or creeping in stop and go traffic..always start right back up immediately.

A very common problem with these cars is the crankshaft position sensor. also camshaft position sensor. they will make the car do exactly what you described. let me know what you find

Yes, they are two different sensors. They can go bad after a few months. Parts aren't made like they used to be. If you need any more help, don't hesitate to write. Phil

My 95 avenger cranks up but when it gets warm it cuts off what is it

Normally the problem is electrical, something gets hot and looses contact. Could be a relay, coil, sensor, or several other components.
When it will not start you will need to figure out if you are missing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors to proceed.

93 Deville, 4.9L, 113k miles. I'm a decent mechanic (have replaced engines, heads, etc.). The latest problem is an intermittent stall. The first time it happened the car was driven for 10 mins then...

Now you can do the Fuel Pump

They seize up mechanically and fail

Did you drive with a fuel pressure gauge,
taped to the windshield

Got a good fuel filter

Looking won't help you

Always do some type of testing,
before replacing anything

I have a 1997 Dodge Avenge and can drive it for about 2 miles and it starts sputering and dies

check the crank sensor next to or behind the main crank pulley, these are known to fail when hot and cut the engine out until it has cooled for a few minutes.

Hello there

Yet another 330i that just die's for no reason. It's a very common problem with MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. The next time it dies just unhook the MAF sensor which sits on the large black pipe that goes from you air filter to the engine, black square thing. The engine should start and drive fine but you should change the MAF when possible.

Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.
