Replacement of instrument and radio lamps on 1999 suburban

Can anyone tell me how to replace the instrument lamps on a 1999 suburban? The lamps I need to replace are the ones in the radio and behind the AC/ Heater controls. If the radio must be pulled can you tell me how to pull the radio?

often the lighter and dash lights are on the same circuit, if the power port doesn't work then you got some fuses out most likely as jigsawbill has mentioned.

I'll tell you, but when you go to do it, you'll probably curse Chevrolet, your car, and me! lol!

You have to reach behind the dash. Even with the seat in the back position, you'll turn into a contortionist! Place an old couch cushion, or something similar on the ground/driveway next to the car, with the door open. Kneel on the couch cushion. Reach up under the dash, and back behind it, with your left hand, while holding onto the steering column with your right.

It's hard to describe this to someone who has never done this before. (Just think. You'll be the expert, when someone you know asks you, when you're done!)

You are feeling for a plastic bulb holder. This holder is about the size of a dime. It resembles one of a gas stove's knobs. It has a round base, and from the middle of the base, it comes up into rectangular shape. If you look at this -> T <- the base is the top of the T. Turn the T upside down, and you'll have the basic shape.

This plastic holder has the lamp bulb in it. You turn it to the RIGHT.
As you face the instrument cluster, it is turned to the Right. You just turn it one quarter turn, then it will come out.
Once you get one in your hand, you'll know why it was difficult to describe. You'll also immediately see how it turns in, and locks into place.

The bulb itself it extracted, by holding the bulb holder in your hand, bulb facing you. You push in, and turn the bulb to the Left.
It is at this point, that I advise you to wear some protective gloves of some kind. The bulb base, could be corroded down in the socket. You may exert enough force to break the bulb, and cut your fingers.
I advise Safety above ALL ELSE!

I also advise that you replace one bulb at a time.
Notice the brass metal ring around the bulb holder base?
This corrodes after time, giving a poor contact. You can take a little fine steel wool, and clean it up. Use care as the steel wool can catch, and bend the brass ring, misshaping it.

Behind the dash panel that you can't see, is a thin plastic flat strip.
Another thing hard to describe. Envision a large U shaped flat piece of plastic, on the back of your instrument housing. The U shape will be upside down, in relation to how it sits on the back of the instrument housing. It's about 1/32nd of an inch thick, and about 2 inches wide.

There are thin flat strips of copper, making a path all the way around this strip. There are holes in this strip, for the various lamp bulbs. The flat copper strips go around these holes, making a connection to the bulb holder. That's what that brass ring on the bulb holder contacts, when it's screwed in.

It is behind your glove box. You have to make sure when take out the glove box be careful of the tabs and also remove the wire on the side. You will see a black box with a a bunch of wires coming out of it. You need to disconnect that mess of wires and remove the two screws that are holding the resistor in the box. Remove it and put the new one in. Be care not to bend the coils all up on the resister. Hope this makes sense, keep me posted, be glad to help.

Transmission Floor Shift Control Indicator Lamp Replacement

Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement.
Rotate the floor shift control indicator lamp socket (2). Pull the socket from the trim bezel.
Remove the bulb from the socket.

Service awd light comes on and off awd doesn't work when light is on

You need to check wiring an connectors at the transfer case shift control module an check power an grounds at the module ! If all seams good there a scan tool will need to be hooked up to check for codes ! If none of this makes no sense or you don't under stand any of this you need to take it to someone who does !

  1. Install the Scan Tool .
  2. Turn the ignition ON, engine OFF.
  3. Use a Scan Tool in order to command the SERVICE indicator (AWD/4WD) lamp OFF.
Does the SERVICE indicator (AWD/4WD) lamp turn off?
Go to Step 3
Go to Step 4


Replace the transfer case shift control module. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement .
Is the repair complete?
Go to Transfer Case Diagnostic System Check


Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel.
Is the repair complete?
Go to Step 5

Believe it is soldered in, as well as the lamps

Same with the radio lamps that fail

They are called stepper motors & you need GM updated ones

May as well do all 4 & all the lamps-watch the video

Instrument nel lighting intermident

lot of work in replacing the instrument cluster panel lamps. you need special tool to remove the radio because some of the panel screws are in there. you will need to disconnect gear indicator and electrical harnesses from instrument cluster. you will also need to remove several panels as well. I have lots of experience doing this and it took me two hours. consider finding someone that does automotive work at their house. word of mouth is the best networking way.

Rearend gasket replacement

there is no plugs or bolts to check the rear end fluid on my 1999 suburban ,I thought maybe you need to take out one of the rearend cover plate bolts,was I right If so witch one?

Where is the flasher located in a 1999 Mercury Villager>

1999 Mercury Truck Villager Wagon 3.3L SFI SOHC 6cyl
The turn signal/hazard lamp flasher is located behind the driver's side of the instrument panel to the right of the steering column.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Locate the flasher assembly under the driver's side of the instrument panel. Press the tab on the flasher and slide it from the bracket.
  3. Detach the flasher from the electrical connector and remove the flasher from the vehicle.
  4. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

1998 Chevy Suburban radio troubles...

Hi Janie,

If the radio powers up, it's not a fuse problem. At least not with the radio itself. The door locks are most likely unrelated. We can address them separately. One thing at a time though.

My first suggestion would be to check for an engaged mute option. If that isn't it, my 2nd choice is the box that you mentioned, that the radio connects to. That is what is drawing my attention.

However I need to know more.

  2. Make/Model of the CD player
  3. Make/Model/Nature of the box the radio connects to. Is it an Amplifier? What is it?
  4. Do all the components power up when the radio does?
  5. When you try to play a CD, does it go through the motions, just with no sound?
