Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

1-2, 2-3 Shift solenoids on 2001 Grand Prix GT

How do I replace the shift solenoids on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT non-supercharged? The dealer said I have to remove the transmission. Is this true? I am planning to do this job myself. Is this wise? Im very mechanically inclined, but I've never gone inside a trans. before other than changing the filter. Any help would be greatly appricated. I believe the trans is an LT65E.

You actually have the 4T65E. The solenoids are on the valve body when is inside the side cover that you see on the drivers side just below the cross over exhaust pipe.

Its not easy task changing them out without taking the transmission out. It can be done but would be an involved process in getting that thing lowered enough on that side to clear the side cover and to get access to that area and for what all is involved it may be simpler to just drop the tranny.

That said, there is an online community you can visit at www.grandprixforums.net that has many knowledgeable people on it not the least of which is a transmission builder that makes his living working on and building 4T65E's, 4L60E's and so on. If you like, sign up there and post up your dilemma there and see what input you get.

I own a 2001 Grand Prix GTP and Ive pulled both the engine and transmission and I would be hesitant to try and do the work you will need to do without dropping the tranny.

most likely in the valve body. Without experience in transmissions I would not attempt. Should be performed by reputable trans shop

98 grand prix gtp tranny

The tranny is called a 4T65E-HD(heavy duty). The rebuild kits are the same for both supercharged and non-supercharged cars. The occasional harshness is caused by the EPC solenoid hanging up from wear. I recommend installing a Superior Shift Correction kit, 4th clutch hub (the splines strip), EPC, and TCC/PWM solenoid.

This combo works great!
