Electrics on ford escort 1.8d van 1994

The electrics on my van have gone wierd. Either they work or they don't sometimes when I turn on any of them the whole lot fail or they just make a buzzing sound. They do not appear to be working from the alternator but from the battery. Some times the engine cannot be turned off even when the ignition is turned off and the key removed when I have to stall the van please help me

    is it charging???

I am fairly sure it is but the internal dash icon light is glowing dimly when the engine is idling slowly and when I am driving the light glows a bit brighter. Having said that the battery has been in the van for the last 3 or 4 days and has started the van even when it has been very cold although it does take a while to fire it up.

    Hi Alicantecoli,

Thanks for your input, but you must have misread my previous comment, it is the battery icon light that glows dimly when the engine is running not the interior light. The van seems to be working fairly normally at the moment except for the dim glow of the battery icon. When I first turn the ignition key the icon which used to be very bright then go out as the van was running now seems to be only half as bright and then stays dim when the van is running, the belt may still need a bit of tightening up but seems to be nearly ok.

Dodgy switch in a door pillar is the cause of the interior light staying on,engine needs new valve /solonoid for it to stop ,the rubber seal on the bottom has perished and you cant buy that on its own,its a complete unit about 70€ .fits on top of the injector pump under the antitheft shroud

The turn signals and hazards quit working on my 1993 ford escort wagon

Hazard lights are nearly perfect, turn signals come and go. Since both failed, it's not likely to be the flashers or switches. If the fuses are good, you have a rusted ground-20 years of rust! Check by jumping new ground wire to green wire. Wires sometimes break inside door jamb and body but not very often. The poor man's solution is to make a tail light with two sharp pins and three feet of wire, check wire at switch, flasher, and every three feet after that. Few people bother with automotive electrics for these reasons.

Hi i have a 1999 escort van diesel the left side light keeps blowning fuses and i have no brake lights and the hand brake light stays on

Hi sounds like you have the usual escort van rear lamp nightmre start by removing the bulb holders in the rear lamps check where the wiring connecter conects to the lamp they should be clean and free of corrosion look for terminals that look black or have broken off the connecter this is so common there is a wiring repair kit available from ford to rectify this the other problem is with the bulb holders themselves should have two metal tags/contacts that pass power from the lamp to the bulbs these often corrode till theres nothing left replace them if they are like this also check you have got the right bulbs in the bulb holders they often get the wrong ones fitted causing all sorts of wierd back feeding problems to the electrical system the favourite is putting a two contact bulb in a single contact bulb holder this will cause nigthmares the other poular solution is to ditch the escort
rear lamps and fit ones from a trailer as they are made a lot better and give less trouble
