Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora

Water in spare tire compartment of trunk after heavy rain.

My trunk was full of water in the area where the spare tire is kept. The dealer said it was due to the recessed area around the license plate not being sealed properly. I consider this to be a design flaw on the part of GM. I had to pay $248.00 to have this sealed by the dealer. If they can seal around doors and windows why can't they properly seal areas in the trunk? (Many people do not check the spare tire compartment unless they have a flat.)

I also have the same problem with my 01 aurora. I keep alot of reference material and books in my trunk and they were all getting damaged, not by water falling down on them but from the evaporation. I will check the licsense plate area,Thanks

Perhaps the GM dealer needs to better train his ASE mechanics to find the problem from the first report of trouble??

I had this issue on my 2008 Torrent. It has something to do with the gasketing seal around the back hatch. GM issued a Bulletin to their dealers on how to fix it which means it is an ongoing problem with the Equinox/Torrent platform. I pushed the issue with GM and my dealer saying that although it wasnt a warranty issue it WAS a design flaw and they paid 2/3 of the cost to repair it :)

Posted too soon, my point is...check for bulletins, they are admission of poor craftsmanship. You may have abrgaining chip on repair costs if they have issued one.

This really is a design flaw on the 2001 aurora, mine does the same thing, you'll notice that after the rain or when you wash it and then open the trunk, water pours in. I could never stop it from leaking in but there is a way to keep your trunk water free. there are 3 drain plugs in the bottom of your trunk under the spare tire. They're plastic, just pop one out or fold it back a little.

U need to carefully check the seams of the sheetmetal for any sign of water or dirt from the road, there is no common leak on these cars, in fact they seldom leak anywhere, the water is most likely splash up from the road, unless u left something out like it was sitting when this water accumulated. Let me know that info.

Water leaks are every tech's nightmare, often the water comes in in places that are hidden by all kinds of body parts, it then runs along seams and deposits far away from the actual leak. I gave u the info u need to try and track this leak down, also i asked for info info about when the leak occurs that u never provided, just trying to help u hear. I don't understand why after taking my own time (not an employee of Fixya) to help u gave me a TFT rating?. Well anyway good luck and try the suggestions I gave, u may get lucky and see it.

Tire compartment is full of water. The carpet in the trunk is not wet. it appears new and well kept. like the water is coming from below.

If you have a center brake light in the trunk lid. This is how the water gets in the well. I silicone all them. Sometimes the rear spoiler will let water in also. I also drill a hole in the bottom to drain the water. Sometimes there are plastic plugs you can pop out under the spare tire.

Trunk lid filling with water

check the gasket inside your trunk, were it meets your trunk lid first, then if thats ok, pull your spare tire out and make sure the drain holes have the rubber plugs in them, if you have had an accident and it was in the rear end area, bring it back to the shop that fixed it oh one more thing, your trunk lid might need to be adjusted, check to see if it lines up, if the gaps around it are all the same, if not, not to adjust it,

Water in trunk where spare tire is in 1998 maxima

Check the weather stripping around the trunk lid. An older car like that could have a bad seal.

!991 buick park avenue. the trunk fills with water during heavy rains..resealing rear window didn't help..where in the heck is the drain plug for the trunk..if any?

There is no drain plug. For the leaks be certain to investigate: sunroof drains, taillight seals, and the trunk seal. Many trunk seals actually channel water into the trunk. New designs are available on many GMs.

Water in spare tire compartment, how does it get there?

It is actually rain water coming in from a bad seal around your trunk. The only way I have found to figure it out is to fold the seat down while someone else runs a water hose around all the gaps around the trunk while you lay in the back and watch for water. It can come in around the edges of the trunk, the spot where your emblem goes, and your tail light assembly.

We have a 1999 nissan altima with water getting into the trunk, in the spare tire compartment. the carpet and cover for the spare compartment are wet and getting mildew as a result. when last checked,...

i have this exact same problem on mine. i see the plugs too, not sure if this is for wiring or possibly to let water out if it ever got in. but doesn't seem to be where the water is coming from. had the problem for years but finally took off the carpet on the walls. there is dust on the metal from it being untouched for so long. but i can see water streaks in the dust and i followed it. for mine atleast, it seems to be coming from where metal meets at the front of the trunk where the latch is at. looks like weather stripping should be protecting it, but its so old i dont think its doing its job. when i pulled the weather stripping off a bit, it had water inside. it has to be getting inside somehow and coming over the metal. defeating its purpose. im just finding it tricky to find the type of weather stripping the car came with as other generic types dont seem to be doing the job

2006 Equinox water leak coming from spare tire compartment

I had the same problem. It is due to a leak in the weather stripping on the back gate. My dealer replaced that. Now, the front of the truck is getting soaked on the inside because the weather stripping around the doors are cracked. I am considering buying a car cover because I can't afford 1000 bucks for something so stupid. Never had this problem with any other Car or SUV.

Water in the trunk where the spare tire is...

It's most likely the weather stripping along the top of your trunk, where the hinges are. There is probably a bad contact, or missing the weather stripping.

pour a small amount of water down the back of the car, give it some time and then take a look inside maybe you will see where it's dripping from. if you can, fold your seats down and sit inside the car with a flashlight while someone else empties a glass of water approx. on your back window, roof of car etc.

Hope this helps :)
