Question about 1984 Volvo GL

1 Answer

Engine failure My volvo only has 118,000 miles on it but it has a problem starting especially in cold weather. The main concern though is the frequent dying of the engine for no particular reason at street or highway speeds it will die like it is getting no gas. It seems to work better if I slip the automatic gear into 2nd or turn off the overdrive then shift back into drive. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

I don't know how handy you are, but check plug condition, distributor condition and plug wires. Is it running smoothly when it does run or is it running rough at all speeds. Check the fuel filters - probably due for a change anyway.

Could need a throttle body cleaning, air mass meter, various other expensive items. So don't guess, but get a good diagnosis from someone who knows these cars.

Also, check battery cables for tightness, check the ground cable at the block for tightness, check the injection system fuse located on the driver's side front fender. Could have moisture in it that causes injectors to act up. Pull the fuse, look for wetness. If any shows, put electrical lube on the fuse tabs and then reinsert the fuse.

Listen to the engine when you have it running and see if you can detect a vacuum leak - it will sound like a low-level sucking noise and look for loose hoses lying in the engine compartment.

When mine acted the way yours is sounding, I changed the air mass meter, only to find I had a bad ground going from the battery to the meter.

Hi Danny, I would have both the vehicle and the remote fob batteries checked and if required, replaced. Cold weather can and does show up problems with batteries. It would also be a good idea to have a diagnostic scan carried out on your vehicle, just to be on the safe side. Regards John

Check coolant level in the radiator when the engine is cold, usually in the morning. If it does't solve the problem check the engine coolant temperature sensor and the harness wiring.

It will live until it dies. Most common cause for engine failure is a failure for the owner to maintain the engine properly. I have a customer with 1,000,000+ miles on a Volvo. Every maintenance item done like clockwork.

Engine makes squeeling noise when first started

Check the belts are still tight enough, sometimes they slacken off with use and then start to squeal, especially in cold/damp weather.

White smoke coming from tail pipe with water when idled

When you first start an engine when it is cold, it is mormal the exhaust pipe will emit water vapor (white steam) and water until the engine reaches running temperature.
If this problem occurs when the engine is hot and been running a while then you could have a head gasket problem, especially if you have to top up the water in the radiator frequently.
You need to get a mechanic to do a compression test on each cylinder to determine the exact problem with the engine.

Temp gauge at half way even when engine stone cold.

Sounds a bit like a bad earth somewhere. Have a look at the wiring and make sure that all contacts are free from rust; especially at the front of the car.

Starting in damp weather 1993 240 wagon, auto/od, 235k miles

perhaps you need a new cap and roter a new spark plug wire set. they don;t like moisture. also check to see if you have any broken or leaking vacuum hoses. the worse case senerio would be that your head gasket is leaking--at cold temps a little antifreeze will enter until everything warms up and it seals shut due to metal expanding. but since you say it's cold weather only--this probably wou;dn't be the case. good luck.
