It sounds like someone has changed into 4wd at speed and broken the internals of the system. Check the relays and fuses first but it sounds more serious than that. If it drives in 2wd put it in reverse an circle listen for any undue noises.

- the relay will be on the inside right wing (as you sit in the car) inside a bolt down electrics box (black thing with contents written on top). It does sound however like your problem is mechanical. do you get a grinding noise in 2WD?

- ok look here, there is the switching motor by the vacuum shift motor. It should be nearest to the left hand axle-shaft above it to the left a little bit. There is however a number of things that operate the 4wd as well as alot of vacuum hoses so I would check the vacuum hoses as well. you also need to check the shift on the fly actuator (SOTF) for signs of corrosion and broken wires. If it is your SOTF these are about $300 dealer fix. see here for pictures (the bottom one).Although if this didn't help you please let me know okay?

I cannot afford more than $3500 for a vehicle. Because I have children, I want a mini van. I found a 2001 Windstar LX with 80k and in really great shape.
I can buy for $3000. Does this sound reasonable and am I making a mistake buying? I drive +- 6k miles per year.
Previous owners have all the maintenance receipts.

On my 99 Passat petrol car a yellow warning light has come on which looks like a sideways view of a gearbox or engine block? I can't find the meaning of this, or what I should do about it, any ideas please? regards Chris
