Hi, I have a problem with my 1997 Ford Fiesta LX (I put ford escort in the product name because it was the closest thing I could find to my car and its age). Every time I start the engine, grinding noises come from it. This usually stops after a few seconds and I've not yet had any trouble starting it but the noises are concerning me. It usually happens first thing in the morning or when it is especially cold and is usually fine afterwards. Could someone please tell me what might be wrong and how much it would be likely to cost me to fix?

generally, the actuall panel should just pry outward. there's a large number of plastic things holding the pannel on. these will most likely have to be replaced.
look for plastic plugs on the pannel. sometimes these hide screws behind them. you've also got to remove the plastic trim inside the door handle. if you have a actuall window crank handle, there will be a clip you'd have to pop out from under with a rag.
be on the lookout for screws with funny-shaped heads, you may have to buy a special screwdriver for them.
make sure you get some assitance from a DIYer or a car specialist with a day off to make sure you get everything put back together right.
for future help reference (as the names here are oriented toward their American market Counterparts), look for the names "Festiva" or "aspire", which I believe is the closest American market equivelant to your son's Fiesta. Pumas could go there as well.
have the battery checked, first sign of a weak battery is bad readings from the dials and guages...
other than that check all your fuses,
The fiesta clocks do sometimes break though - so it may be a broken tachometer, about £40 from ford, I think - been a long time since I bought any ford parts...
