Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

My 04 pontiac g p systems light said charging system failure.

I was at a stop light when the car began to idle up and down and seem like it was going to stall out. Then the electronic systems failure showed up on the information center. When I shut the heater off it went out and the car ran fine. Is this a battery problem?

    i had the same problem this morning. It was -23 degrees below zero and i had both heated seats on full blast, rear defroster, and heat on full strength. i think the cold temp had somethin to do with it but i shut rear defrost off and everything was ok. i think the cold batteries cant handle all the power...

    I have the same problem. I went and got the battery and the alternater tested. Both were good. Not sure what the problem is, I just turn off the rear defrost when it happens.

    i have the same problem!!! and i get nervous now because it happened early january for the first time and then my car actually died in the middle of the i took it to the shop and they replaced my i am afraid it will happen again because the light came on again...maybe ill try turning the heat off

    Me too! Anytime I slow or stop at a light, the "charging system failure" comes up. The air volume coming from vents changes at the same time also. The other problem I have is stalling upon initially putting the car in gear, weather it has been warmimg up or not, and "charging system failure" shows up for this also. It makes me afraid of sitting at a light because I don't want the car to stall right there, which it always feels like it wants to do. GRR!! Can anyone help? My battery and starter are both fine. Whats the deal?

    This year my car has been idling rough . feels as if its gonna stall as well when stopped . First I thought it was the cold weather we'd been having , now that its warming up my system failure light still comes on . 

    Took it in to be checked , thought it was my battery and or could be altinator  but turns out when they hooked it up to their high tech machines , because the light didnt come on at this time they could not find the problem . But still charged for darn bill !! I have 2 little ones with me , last thing I need is to be stranded . Afraid to take a long road trip because of this ... wish this problem could be fixed so I can feel like I'm driving a realiable vehicle again !!! Shelley

    I am now having the same problem in my 2005 Grand Prix GT. Had to make a sudden stop to avoid a deer and the light came on. On my way to work this morning had to avoid a car that pulled out in front of me, had to make a sudden lane change and brake. Same warning light came on again? Why would sudden braking cause this?

I have had the same warning...charging system failure. So far I've tried 2 different altenator's...2 used batteries and ended up buying a new battery. Problem still exists to the extent that when i often shut the car off and go to start again..Nothing. I disconnect the negative post i hear a clicking sound and hook the cable back up and try turning the car over starts without needing a boost...sounds like it resets and then allows the car to start. I've taken it to a number of mechanics and they have no clue...any idea's ?

if you know where the EGR valve is located take a wrench and gently tap on the valve if you notice an immediate change in the idle you have found the problem, the problem is the egr vlve is slightly binding and the right way to fix it is to replace it

fuel pump is burned out from running out of gas, the pump is cooled by the gas it sits in inside the fuel tank, when you run low on fuel or out of gas you over heat the pump severely and the bearings in the pump seize up, have seen it dozens of times in my 30 years of dealer work.

Idle surging down a little when at stop lights in my 2000 mustang 3.8 never dies but seem's close.every 6 to 10 seconds no difference noticed while driving down the road. changed AIC valve for a c

probably cause by the a/c cutting in and out or running at idle . Fit an idle compensator to the system throttle or raise the idle speed 300rpm.

Dome light started staying on, then the headlights dimmed and car died. 99 Pontiac sunfire

It sounds like charging system failure to me. Most likely a bad alternator. The entire charging system needs to be checked including the battery, the battery cables and connections and the alternator and alternator circuits.

Just to help you understand.....the reason your dome lamps started coming on is because they are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM) (AKA Body Computer) The body computer did not have enough power going to it to function properly and this is what caused your dome lamps to come on (Computers do all kinds of WIERD things when they start getting delirious from malnutrition).
Then as the charging system voltage got even lower, this is what caused the headlamps to go dim. Finally, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (AKA Engine Computer) did not have enough power to function proerly and this caused your engine to shut down.

Diagnose and repair the charging system problem and all should start working properly again.

I was driving this morning, stopped at a store, when I started my car and put it into drive my Charging System Failure Light came on. I turned off my radio, heat and heated seats. The light went off. ...

1. Possibly your battery is on its way out.( Heavy Discharge Test will confirm this )
2. Your charging system is poor, ie:- Alternator belt is loose or the alternator is on way out, or you have a bad connection to the alternator.
Most usually its a loose alternator belt.

This is a common problem with these cars. I have had it come on also a couple of times. No need to worry unless it stays on.

Fluxuation in electrical power

This is normal behavior in Grand Ams. I've had a '97 and a '04 and both did this from day 1. You'll also notice the lights dim/blower slow down more if you press the brake pedal while idling w/ blower on high and lights on; it's just that the alternator on these cars can't output anywhere near full power at idle. (my '03 S-10 also does this). Watch your voltmeter if you have one, when running above 1200 RPM you should see the system running between 13.5 - 14.5 (usually you just have to eyeball this as the gauges aren't well marked, mine are only marked 8 & 18 - should read slightly past halfway). If you're still worried, have someone check the system for you, many places like Autozone or Advanced will do this for free.
