Question about 1994 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

1 Answer

My mercedes e300 (1989) starts and runs ok but then cuts out.

The weather is cold (-10 celsius). the car normally starts fine but recently during cold or sometimes wet weather is difficult to start. this has now progressed so that it now starts straight away however cuts out either straight away or after 20 - 30 seconds even with the accelerator pressed. (seems like something is just deciding to cut off the engine, have noticed the oil level is low and will adjust this, have checked all the spark plugs and leads, connectors etc and can see no obvious faults...

Check the engine wiring, look for cracked wires, take look at positive cable going from battery to starter it runs together with 3 wires oil level, starter selenoid and oil pressure. Check the insulation on the wires. If they are cracked replace. You have to buy the whole positive cable from MB (can't buy just the 3 wires) cost from the MB is about 140.00

I had a similar problem with my 1986 300e , which got progressively worse until the car was no longer driveable, I changed out the fuel pump relay and the problem went away.

My Mercedes a160 problems. After or during rain with the water on the road the car will have an engine shutter and slows right down and then cuts out,

This sounds electrical in nature.have you inspected underneath and inside engine bay for trailing or bare or cracked cables.water is ingressing onto part of the electric system.could be anything from the ignition such as ht leads ....cooling such as electric fan.... Alternator....battery.check every where for loose ...frayed or bare may have lost a splash tray that was removed during servicing or water may even be finding its way through front grill straight onto part of ignition system.lastly the ecu will record most events and log them as error codes which can be read at a local garage and reveal what may really be going on.unfortunaely some garages charge a fee whereas you might find a local one who will not.

It cranks, but it does not run

Have you check the plugs, cables, cap/rotor ?

One thing you can try since it starts good in warm weather, is to ,on a cold morning, take a hair dryer and warm up the suspect part to warm weather condition. Then try and start the car. If it start ok you have probably found the weak part.

1998 S-10 cold start

The cold weather wreaks havoc on everything. I am thinking that the cold weather and your octane rating are not getting along, hence no error codes. Have you tried fuel drier and or octane booster?Since the truck starts when the temperature gets warmer, I would look at octane as the culprit. Try some octane booster and see if that helps. Let me know. Hope this helps.

Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather

Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.
