My VW 1.9 Passat diesel y reg rear brake pads need changing, Is this an easy job for an average DIY man? Do I need special tools and anythiing to be aware of.

Yes you will need special tools for a rear brake job. you will need a set of xzn wrenches large ones say 12 and up to 18 I believe, and you will need a caliper tool that spins and compresses the caliper at the same time

you need a special tool which fits into the two slots on the caliper and rotates while applying pressure to return the caliper piston. it is because the caliper piston is threaded for use with a combination parking brake.

just like any other disc bake job colapse pistons replace pads just standard hand tools will do the job.be carefull when you put the bolts back in that hold the caliper they strip real real easy

How do I retract the caliper piston?


Note on rear-caliper piston tool:
Instead of paying $50 for the VW or similar custom tool, you can use a generic $5 import "cube" tool available at most national-chain part stores.
# One side of the cube has 4 prongs. Grind or file off 2 diagonally opposite aka kitty-corner prongs to allow the cube to fit the vw rear brake piston.
# Use with a 3/8" ratchet. It can be easier to fasten the rear caliper back onto the carrier without the rotor in place while using this tool. That way you get a little extra leverage.
# Use as follows: engage the two prongs and turn piston 180° clockwise. Remove the tool. Use a generic caliper tool or a c-clamp and push the piston in about 2mm. Keep alternating back and forth between the cube tool and the c-clamp until piston is almost all the way in. If you are strong enough, you may not even need the c-clamp - just push with the cube tool as you turn. Instead of the cube, you can even use needle-nose pliers, but then you definitely need the c-clamp.
# Even with this special tool, the rear brakes can be rather difficult, so make sure you have plenty of time. I still recommend purchasing or renting the $50 professional tool cause it is much easier to use.
# If you're totally confused by all this, just take your wheels off and look at the brakes up close. Its simpler than it sounds on paper. And get the Bentley publishers shop manual for your car. That book pays for itself after one or two jobs. If your still at lost, Auto Zone has the loner tool you'll need for $50.00 and you'll get it back after you return the tool and they can give you the step by step instructions mentioned above. How much would it cost to get my brakes fixed on a 2006 vw passat? also, what about replacing the grill?


an 06 passat has special rear calipers that have to be taken in by a scan tool if you try to turn them in you will damage parking brake motor the brakes also need reset after installation by scan tool or there will be codes in parking brake circuit but the fronts are normal except for sensors on the inboard pads but i beleive at the dealer its around 800 for rotors and pads all the way round the grille im not sure of maybe 150-200 total

Passat 2003 tdi, brake pad change..


Proper size wrenches and a large C-clamp to push piston back into the caliper is only tools for the front, but back disk brakes require special tool to TURN the piston as it is pushed back into caliper to reset emergency brake. This tool can often be borrowed from Auto parts store or purchased from Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40732 for about $20. Don't try to service rear disks without the tool, Calipers can be broken if not retracted properly!

You Can probably accomplish this yourself if you have a brake pad warning light or ABS/ASC light on you may need a BMW tech to reset the system to complete the job.

Replacing brake pads in 2001 passat tdi


You'll need a few special tools. You will need some common metric wrenches and sockets, 10-19mm will be more than enough, and you'll need an 8mm Allen bit as well, to remove the caliper mounting bolts (these anchor the caliper to the caliper carrier). If you're doing rear brakes, you'll also need the proper tools to screw the calipers back in. If you're doing front brakes, you can use a C-clamp to compress the pistons back in. Other than that, and maybe a big beefy screwdriver to separate the caliper from the carrier, there's nothing to it.
