Question about 1996 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

1996 F150 4X4 5.8L Auto trans. I have no turn signals or brake lights except brake light on top of the cab. 4 way flasher are not working either. I checked all the fuses and they are fine. I have noticed if it is around 20 degrees or colder the multi funtion switch some times acts up when turning right but it has never effected the brake lights.

Dash light are working and Just checked all the bulbs and they are fine.

  • didit4fun Jan 06, 2009

There is a power distribution box. I checked the fuse's there as well.
I just rechecked the fuse's and they are all fine. I even switched the 15 amp fuses around to make sure.

Is it possible a relay would cause this??

  • didit4fun Jan 06, 2009

Ok, I swapped the relays around and that did nothing. So I by passed relays. Same result nothing.

I am beginning to think this is a little more in depth!!

  • didit4fun Jan 06, 2009

I just checked the trailer light outlet. I have running lights there, but no brake or turn signal either.

  • didit4fun Jan 06, 2009

Just changed flashers. No help at all either.

  • didit4fun Jan 06, 2009

The running light are working. No brake lights except on the roof of the cab. No turn signals at all and no 4 way flashers at all.

  • didit4fun Jan 09, 2009

Well, I stopped and talked to a ford truck mechanic. He informed me that the brake light switch goes to the multifunction switch and then to the roof brake light. He said being I have no turn signals, 4 way flashers or brake light on the box it has to be the multifunction switch. So I bought one and replaced it and sure enough that fixed it.!! He said Ford started to do that in 1994. H'mm, I thought until now that the brake light switch only operated the brake lights. Lesson learned. I hope this helps some one else on this form.

96 chevy silverado, taillights just stopped working... nothing to cause this effect. they worked the night before. they just stopped. b/u brake hazards and turn signals all work. checked all fuses in the...

The turn signal switch in the steering column has a short in some models. Have someone watch your brake lights and move the 4 way flasher on top of the column from left to right without deploying the switch for the 4 ways. If your brake lights flash ,the harness needs to be replaced if they are still available. Harness around 300.00 plus labor.

Turn signal,brake lights not working

I would check for voltage at the turn signal switch. The brake lights go thru the turn signal switch, except for the high mount light.

You may need to replace the flasher, the turn signals use a different flasher but the same wireing so that would be the first place i would start.

1996 Chev Silverado K3500 dually, no brake lights

Check at the light socket in the rear, where your lights don't work. You need a test light or a voltage meter, and check to see that you have a groun there, power for your parking light, and power to the brake light. You should have power for the parking lights seeing that it works, and a ground. Just verify that your power for the brakes is getting to the bulb, or not. Just a good place to start.
And you are correct that if the third brake light works (top) your brake light switch is fine.
